Premji Plans New Sectors, Staff for Indian Tech Giant Wipro

December 15th, 2009

Azim Premji turned a family business that specialized in consumer products such as vegetable oil into an Indian high-technology giant that employs almost 100,000 people world-wide handling software and technology outsourcing. Along the way, Mr. Premji, 64 years old, has become one of India’s richest men.

Wipro chairman Azim Premji is expanding the technology firm into new countries and new lines of business.

His company, Wipro Ltd., became one of India’s top technology firms, but along with the rest of the outsourcing industry has been hard hit by the financial crisis that affected some of its biggest customers: U.S. financial institutions. Revenue in the year ended March 31 was $5.005 billion, up 1.5% from $4.933 billion a year earlier but down from consistently double digit growth rates in previous years.

Wipro is now eyeing expansion in new countries and has entered new lines of business. In an interview, Mr. Premji talked about how he evaluates acquisition opportunities, is increasing the ranks of non-Indians in the company and is developing an eco-energy business.

Outsourcer Aragon Buys Krugle

December 15th, 2009

Software outsourcing company Aragon Consulting Group has acquired Krugle, which has specialized in code search and analysis.

Aragon announced the acquisition on Tuesday. With the Krugle technology, Aragon plans to enhance its Next.0 Delivery Platform with real-time on-demand visibility into outsourced software development; defects reduction; developer productivity, and code-centric team collaboration.

“The advantage in terms of buying Krugle is that Krugle technology helps us be significantly more productive in delivering our software services,” said Mel Badgett, vice president of marketing at Aragon and a former Krugle official. Krugle technology offers visibility into existing source code, enabling more efficient changes to software, Badgett said.

Aragon will continue support of Krugle Enterprise products and the Krugle Open Source code search service. Development of Krugle technology also will continue with Aragon adding integration and customization options.

IBM Data Center Construction Underway in New Zealand

December 15th, 2009

IBM announced that construction has commenced on its IBM Reliability Level 3+ data center in Auckland, New Zealand, which is being built to support clients’ mission critical applications and operations.
The announcement marks the beginning of a more than NZD $80 million investment in the data center over the next decade.

Working in collaboration with New Zealand developer Highbrook Development through a long term leasing and operating commitment, IBM will locate the data center at Highbrook Business Park in East Tamaki. The 56,000 square foot facility, built to IBM global specifications, will include a 16,000 square foot data center and is expected to become fully operational by late 2010. Expansion options allow for further stages to be developed as demand rises.

IBM stated that its new facility will be the only commercially available data center of its caliber in New Zealand. The data center will be cloud computing enabled, highly resilient and have the environmental protection advantages of IBM’s data center design characterised by energy efficiency, green technologies, scalability and the latest power and cooling technologies. For instance, the data center will include a cooling system which, during cold months, will leverage outside air, reducing the need for chillers.

“This is a highly significant investment in New Zealand’s future technological infrastructure,” said Jennifer Moxon, Managing Director of IBM New Zealand. “It is the result of long term strategic planning and signals IBM’s commitment to enable New Zealand to become a world class technology center and advances the growth of the digital economy.”

“On completion, IBM’s new data center will not only give New Zealand businesses access to world class computing facilities, but provide a platform to enable New Zealand to become an internationally recognised provider of outsourcing services,” said Matt Oostveen, Data Center Research Manager, IDC Australia and New Zealand. “Highly reliable and resilient data centers are an important feature in a modern business environment, and IDC expects to see growth in IT services that will directly benefit the local economy as a result of this investment.”

“IBM’s new facility is core infrastructure for the 21st century digital economy that the Government and ICT industry are mutually striving to develop,” said Brett O’Riley, Chief Executive Officer, NZICT Group. “It heralds the explosion of software as a service and cloud enabled computing which will drive a step change in productivity and innovation, while its design establishes the benchmark for green ICT in this country.”

‘BFSI is the next big thing in domestic outsourcing’

December 15th, 2009

TEN years ago, the world’s biggest IT company then, IBM, did the unthinkable: it struck a deal with a company in India (Cadbury ) to take care of its IT needs. It was one of the country’s first domestic IT outsourcing deals. The rest, as they say, is history. More than a dozen such deals later — including the game-changing contract with Bharti Airtel — IBM is the king of the hill in domestic IT outsourcing. Recently,ET NOW’s R Sridharan caught up with Shanker Annaswamy, regional general manager of IBM India & South Asia, to talk about Big Blue’s journey so far and the road ahead. Excerpts from the exclusive interview:

Shanker, it’s been 10 years since IBM bagged its first outsourcing contract in India . It’s been a long journey. How do you look back on it?

1999 was indeed when we signed the first contract, but 2004 marked the biggest turning point for us — the outsourcing deal with Bharti. It was $750-million contract, and 2006 followed with Idea cellular and Vodafone. I think, we’ve done wonderfully well.

If you look at the last year and a half, every Indian IT vendor has been hit by the global downturn, especially in the financial services market. How has IBM in India coped with the downturn?

Given the global market conditions and the fact that large deals were not happening, we were looking at our successes here, and asking ourselves how we can replicate the successes beyond the telecom industry. I am very happy to share with you that we looked at customers beyond telecom, to customers like Amul and media companies like Sun TV.

You have a lot of Indian vendors now competing for domestic outsourcing deals. Wipro, for example, recently bagged the Aircel deal, which IBM was pitching for as well. How do you see the competition from India vendors?

It took some time for other competitors to look at, understand the model and then go and win one or two accounts. But if you look at the real strategy behind it, it’s not simple IT consolidation. It is your capability to bring in tools and asset-based services than labourbased services, and bring research to play.

You also have HP and Dell, which were traditionally hardware firms, getting into services. Are they a bigger threat?

Industry domain knowledge and capabilities are not built overnight. The differentiator for us is very clearly our integration: consulting and system and technology business like the mainframes and big computers, then the software business, which is an integrating business, then we have services end-to-end . Our ability to take a certain portion of the customer business and turn it into a profitable proposition for them is very big and it will take competition time to catch up.

But what are the other sectors apart from telecom and manufacturing that will open up to outsourcing within India?

BFSI area would be a potential opportunity for us to look at. Public sector will take time. Healthcare could be a huge opportunity, but it may take some time as well.

IBM doesn’t disclose its India headcount, but as I understand it’s 90,000 or even one lakh. How does this number split up?

Actually, we are 73,000-plus employees and we are growing. The large proportion of the employee population is in global delivery missions , including the global delivery and then the IBM Daksh BPO outsourcing processes. The rest of the business will be then the domestic business, research labs, software labs and other groups.

At what point would IBM want to de-risk its India strategy or do you think that’s not a concern?

There is no timeline by which we go. This base of 73,000 was built not on a certain number to be achieved or cut off, it depends on our customers, our clients, their projects, and their core competence and domain expertise that comes in. So, India continues to be a key component of this and I would expect it to grow.

Finally, before the global economy slipped into recession, there was a lot of talk about how India had become an expensive place for IT outsourcing. Is India still competitive?

I think so. We will continue to be so. Because India has a unique advantage of being a pioneer here and also it has a large skill base, and the track record. But we have to be careful not to sit on these successes but continue to train and skill our future workforce.

Recession cuts supply of freelance IT work

December 15th, 2009

Except business services, one-person suppliers of IT have been hit harder by the recession than their counterparts in any other major sector that uses freelancers.

Almost 70% of members of the PCG, the freelancers’ trade group, who work in computing said IT contracts had been harder to come by since the recession began.

While engineers were almost as affected – 60% said new contracts were down, only business services freelancers, offering tax and legal aid, fared worse than those in IT.

Freelancers in financial services, journalism, creative roles, PR/publicity and other fields, such as construction, all reported less of a fall out from the recession.

Publicity freelancers were the most unscathed, given that only a quarter felt that their workload had suffered from the weak economy, and half said it hadn’t.

IT contractors offer a gloomy contrast – just 16% said that their pipeline of contracts had not dried up since January, when the recession began, while most said it had.

The PCG, which surveyed 1600 freelancers for National Freelancers Day, suggested most IT freelancers have proved anything but recession-proof. A spokesperson said:

“Due to the fact that IT contractors tend to work for big clients, such as financial institutions and government departments, it is more likely that in the recession they will shed contractors as a savings exercise.”

“There is a greater propensity for big business and large departments to outsource and look for the most efficient way of managing this procurement process.”

One of the IT contractors surveyed said that, unlike some industries, private and public sector jobs in IT were vulnerable to outsourcing, particularly during a recession, but also before and after it.

Ciklum Buys Main Activities from Mondo’s Bankruptcy

December 14th, 2009

On the 7th of December 2009 Ciklum ApS has signed an agreement with the liquidator of Mondo A/S (www.mondo.dk) to take over the main part of Mondo’s remaining business activities. This purchase concerns Mondo’s outsourcing business which includes 150 employees in Denmark, Ukraine and Pakistan, and some Danish and a few foreign customers.

The transfer began on the 7th of December and most of the projects are already fully functional. The customers are no longer affected by the disruption which the bankruptcy has caused over the last week.

Ciklum is already a well-known professional outsourcing services provider with 700 employees primarily in Ukraine so it sees the acquisition of 150 new employees and the continuation of the work to be easily consummated before Christmas. Ciklum’s organic growth just in November was 26 people, giving confidence for Torben Majgaard, Ciklum CEO to expect 1000 employees headcount already in Q2 2010.

Ciklum is working almost exclusively with long term contracts, where customers have their own development teams. “We ensure a high degree of networking among our customers so that they learn from each other. With the new customers of Mondo this networking will be even better for both the existing and newly arrived customers,” says Mr. Majgaard.

“In our industry it is important to be focused, have a good control over the costs and skills. We see the acquisition of Mondo’s activities to strengthen us so that we in 2010 can provide an even better service to all our customers,” concludes Torben Majgaard.
