Azim Premji turned a family business that specialized in consumer products such as vegetable oil into an Indian high-technology giant that employs almost 100,000 people world-wide handling software and technology outsourcing. Along the way, Mr. Premji, 64 years old, has become one of India’s richest men.

Wipro chairman Azim Premji is expanding the technology firm into new countries and new lines of business.

His company, Wipro Ltd., became one of India’s top technology firms, but along with the rest of the outsourcing industry has been hard hit by the financial crisis that affected some of its biggest customers: U.S. financial institutions. Revenue in the year ended March 31 was $5.005 billion, up 1.5% from $4.933 billion a year earlier but down from consistently double digit growth rates in previous years.

Wipro is now eyeing expansion in new countries and has entered new lines of business. In an interview, Mr. Premji talked about how he evaluates acquisition opportunities, is increasing the ranks of non-Indians in the company and is developing an eco-energy business.
