IT outsourcing consultants: same great advice, new low price

February 26th, 2010

The economic downturn has taken its toll on the IT services industry, and consequently, on the consultancies that swelled to support corporate outsourcing efforts in better days. Over the last two years, everyone—from the IT outsourcing arms of the biggest general business advisories (the KPMGs and Accentures, for instance) to the consulting divisions of IT service providers (the IBMs and HPs) to the leading outsourcing-specific consultancies (the TPIs and Alsbridges)—has been hit with layoffs, consolidation and upheaval.

But what’s been difficult for the consulting industry and the community of IT outsourcing experts it employed may have an upside for IT organizations in need of external expertise. Some of the talent that once logged $300 an hour for the likes of IBM, TPI or EquaTerra have set up shop for themselves, and—minus the overhead of their big bosses—are available at as much as half the cost.

Mark Ruckman is one example. He spent more than 12 years at IBM Global Services in a variety of roles from outsourcing delivery to sales. His tenure at Big Blue was followed by a stint at outsourcing consultancy Alsbridge, where he led clients through RFPs, vendor selection and contract negotiation. Today he provides the same service for his clients as a solo consultant—for about 30 percent less.

Concierge communications announces the addition of directpointe to their managed services portfolio

February 26th, 2010

Concierge Communications, a national business communications services consulting company, today announced the addition of DirectPointe to their expanding Managed Services portfolio. Concierge Communications will be DirectPointe’s first master agent and the companies will work together to offer businesses a full suite of IT outsourcing tools and managed IT services to help manage their computing infrastructure in a more efficient and controlled manner.

“We’re excited to add DirectPointe’s products and services to our portfolio along with their nine-year track record,” said Clark Atwood, Vice President of Concierge Communications. “Their managed IT services and data products will complement our success in managed voice services. Companies are looking to do more with less in 2010, and they desire to remove many of the technical management headaches and skyrocketing costs associated with technology. DirectPointe rounds out our service offerings for managed voice and network services and hosted services. Their model allows us to offer managed desktop services, LAN services, virtualization services and much more.”

DirectPointe will support Concierge Communications and its agents with a combined effort through DirectPointe’s sales team.

“DirectPointe has a history of developing strong partnerships by providing quality customer service and convenience,” said Dan Atkinson, VP of Marketing & Alliances. “As a leader in the managed IT services industry, it is important for us to deploy these types of partner programs so we can service customers with unique IT outsourcing needs. We are pleased to have such a prominent and well-respected master agent partner representing DirectPointe. Working closely with Concierge Communications will allow us to promote and provide more holistic outsourced IT solutions to the Concierge dealer network.”

Highlights of the master agent program include generous commissions for the life of the customer, DirectPointe sales and marketing resources, the ability to add new offerings without an upfront investment, and the ability to increase bandwidth needs for existing clients. The true benefit of this master partner relationship is the ability to offer IT services to customers with one reliable source to manage all of their IT needs on a continual basis and for one predictable monthly fee.

Advans survey reveals that 75 percent of executives prefer domestic outsourcing vs. Offshore

February 26th, 2010

Advans, a solution provider and IT consulting firm, has announced today, the results of a survey that highlight the growing popularity of domestic outsourcing. According to the Advans’ IT Outsourcing Survey, 75 percent of executives prefer outsourcing domestically rather than offshore. Additionally, the survey found that 37 percent of executives were interested in additional outsourcing of at least some IT functions in the next 12 months. The top two areas under consideration are QA activities and database administration.

“We were interested in learning more about executives’ opinions regarding outsourcing. The results showed that the majority of executives are considering outsourcing strategies that are closer to home,” explained Paul Angelo, Vice President of Service Delivery, Advans IT Services. “These results will help us refine our services so we can continue to deliver cost-effective solutions that meet the needs of IT executives.”

Respondents also revealed the types of outsourcing they have used in the past, which include application development, all areas of IT infrastructure support, and the use of domestic consultants.

Other key findings include:

– Many respondents are interested in the use of Managed Services for supporting all IT functional areas. Other future outsourcing opportunities of interest include Operation/Monitoring Activities, Human Resources, Help Desk, and Business Intelligence.

– Of the people who have used outsourcing in the past, the majority rated their experience as being very favorable.

Advans can configure the optimal outsourcing model, using any desired mixture of onsite, remote domestic and offshore resources to meet your demanding specifications. Our hybrid outsourcing model integrates all team members, regardless of location, to provide cost-effective solutions that will meet your SLA’s. “We strongly believe that this approach ensures not only the highest quality service while saving you money, but allows for enhanced communication to bring you greater control over your environment,” said Peo Nathan, CEO & President of Advans.

IT outsourcing users must protect against hackers

February 26th, 2010

IT outsourcing users have been urged to protect themselves against the risk of hackers, as the consequences can be huge if they do not.

Luis Corrons, technical director for Panda Security, said that firms potentially stand to lose millions of pounds if gaps in their security systems are not plugged.

According to the specialist, many cybercriminals can take money out of a company bank account unnoticed and it can be months before any loss is registered, by which time it is far too late.

Mr Corrons told IT outsourcing users: “Small and medium companies, mainly, are the ones that are most in danger, because they don’t have huge security teams in place. We see cases [of this] on almost a daily basis.”

Recently, IT security users learned of research from M86 Security which found that there has been a significant rise in the number of cyber attacks through social networking sites such as Twitter.

Most multinational companies use IT outsourcing: study

February 26th, 2010

Ninety-three percent of multinational corporations (MNCs) have undertaken some form of partial outsourcing or out-tasking projects with data center leading the way, said Orange Business Services Tuesday when announcing results from a recent survey on outsourcing.

According to the company, it surveyed more than 600 IT decision-makers from MNCs operating in a wide range of industries.

Results of the survey indicated that 30 percent of those outsourcing projects are data centers related, followed by desktop management (14 percent) and data networks (14 percent), said Orange Business Services, adding that 13 percent have outsourced fixed voice networks and nearly 11 percent have moved to a hosted model for enterprise applications.

The leading reason for outsourcing a service was not to reduce costs but to gain access to specialized IT skills available from an outsourced provider, said the service provider. Cost reduction was a close second, while improving service delivery to end users came third, the firm added.

The results were slightly more predictable when it came to looking at the inhibitions of decision-makers toward outsourcing, with loss of control being ranked first (65 percent), Orange Business Services noted. Security ranked fourth in the list of inhibitors, suggesting that worries over the integrity and safety of data have been partially allayed and they are now focused on the more practical issues around moving to an outsourced model, the firm said.

“The results of the survey are very encouraging with regard to the future of the outsourcing model,” said Eric M.K. Ng, vice president, Global Communications Solutions, Asia Pacific, Orange Business Services, “Decision-makers clearly understand the benefits such models bring and have moved on from concerns around security and are now focused on ensuring that any investments realize not only the cost savings, but also the knowledge transfer promised by third party providers.”

Perhaps acting as an accelerant to the outsourcing model, joint innovation was cited as being a must-have for the continual improvement and adoption of outsourced services, said the service provider. Joint innovation related to outsourced business model enhancements was either a must-have or nice-to-have for 85.5 percent of respondents while 14.5 percent said that it was not important or they had no opinion on its importance, survey results indicated.

Baltimore county CC expands IT outsourcing

February 26th, 2010

The Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland has extended a contract for an outside provider to manage its IT services. The initial agreement, signed in 2007, has been extended to December 2012. The outsourcing effort encompasses the positions of chief technology officer and director of the project management office, as well as project managers and subject matter specialists.

During the initial contract, the college system said in a statement, the CampusWorks team has reorganized the IT Services department; created a new helpdesk and technology support center; implemented identity management, Microsoft SharePoint, and a student portal; done enhancements to the Banner system; developed a data warehouse integrated to the Banner system; completed an upgrade to the college telephone systems; implemented emergency communications services; and bolstered security, and business continuity.

The community college has three campuses and two extension centers with 65,000 students and an operating budget of $169 million.

Darrow Neves, the college’s CTO and a vice president of operations with CampusWorks, acknowledged the role played by Sandra Kurtinitis, the college system’s president and her cabinet in the success of the outsourcing agreement. “[They] have exhibited strong leadership on every occasion where difficult technology decisions were required,” he said. He added that the internal college staff has worked hard to accomplish the goals and objectives set for IT.
