HP puts own man in charge of ex-EDS

February 25th, 2010

HP today stamped its authority on day-to-day operations at the former EDS by replacing the services unit’s boss Joe Eazor with its own man, Tom Iannotti.

Iannotti, previously managing director of HP Americas and Technology Solutions Group, will now run the group’s global outsourcing operation, HP Enterprise Services.

The unit was formed when HP bought EDS for $13.9bn in 2008. Deep cuts to staff and benefits have followed.

Iannotti will report to Ann Livermore, executive vice president of Enterprise Business, one of HP’s three massive divisions. Enterprise Business also incorporates software, servers and storage.

Eazor, who joined HP through its acquisition of EDS, will meanwhile become “senior vice president of corporate growth initiatives”, a strategy role with a focus on China and India.

Wipro snatches multi-million dollar PSB outsourcing contract from Satyam

February 25th, 2010

Under the agreement, Wipro will be responsible for system integration, provisioning and management of the Finacle core banking platform and enterprise applications to PSB branches across the country.

An earlier agreement with Satyam in 2006 was terminated last year after the troubled outsourcing firm failed to fulfil all PSB’s criteria. This followed revelations that Satyam founder and chairman B Ramalinga Raju had been inflating the company’s profits for years, leaving a $1 billion hole in the balance sheet.

As part of the new programme, Wipro will also undertake commissioning and management of the bank’s data centre and the disaster recovery centre, and service and support operations.

Sardar G.S.Vedi, PSB chairman and MD says: “The vision of the bank is to leverage technology to achieve business transformation. We are re-engineering our IT processes and applications to deliver superior quality of service and products to accelerate business growth and achieve operational excellence.”

Orange Business Services: Most MNCs practice IT outsourcing

February 25th, 2010

Ninety-three percent of MNCs have undertaken some form of partial outsourcing or out-tasking projects with data center leading the way, said Orange Business Services Tuesday when announcing results from a recent survey on outsourcing.

According to the company, it surveyed more than 600 IT decision-makers from multinational corporations operating in a wide range of industries.

Results of the survey indicated that 30 percent of those outsourcing projects are data centers related, followed by desktop management (14 percent) and data networks (14 percent), said Orange Business Services, adding that 13 percent have outsourced fixed voice networks and nearly 11 percent have moved to a hosted model for enterprise applications.

The leading reason for outsourcing a service was not to reduce costs but to gain access to specialized IT skills available from an outsourced provider, said the service provider. Cost reduction was a close second, while improving service delivery to end users came third, the firm added.

The results were slightly more predictable when it came to looking at the inhibitions of decision-makers toward outsourcing, with loss of control being ranked first (65 percent), Orange Business Services noted. Security ranked fourth in the list of inhibitors, suggesting that worries over the integrity and safety of data have been partially allayed and they are now focused on the more practical issues around moving to an outsourced model, the firm said.

“The results of the survey are very encouraging with regard to the future of the outsourcing model,” said Eric M.K. Ng, vice president, Global Communications Solutions, Asia Pacific, Orange Business Services, “Decision-makers clearly understand the benefits such models bring and have moved on from concerns around security and are now focused on ensuring that any investments realize not only the cost savings, but also the knowledge transfer promised by third party providers.”

Perhaps acting as an accelerant to the outsourcing model, joint innovation was cited as being a must-have for the continual improvement and adoption of outsourced services, said the service provider. Joint innovation related to outsourced business model enhancements was either a must-have or nice-to-have for 85.5 percent of respondents while 14.5 percent said that it was not important or they had no opinion on its importance, survey results indicated.

Finally, the survey looked at IT governance best practices and certifications with regard to managing both IT spend and infrastructure from financial and regulatory stand points. An impressive 85 percent of respondents were satisfied with their existing governance model, the firm said.

Regarding compliance, 52 percent said that ITIL played an important or extremely important role in governance, Orange Business services noted. Sarbanes Oxley or Basel II was considered important or extremely important by 44 percent while COBIT was considered important or extremely important by only 15 percent, the firm added.

BBC IT contractors vote on strike

February 25th, 2010

BBC IT services contractors, employed by Siemens, are balloting on strike action.

The contractors are concerned about a pay freeze, announced in recent weeks, as well as redundancies. In the four months to January, 70 Siemens contractors working at the broadcaster were made redundant. The media trade union Bectu believes 50 further staff who work on server management could now be at risk as Siemens considers offshoring their roles to Romania.

The vote is for a one day strike to take place in late March or early April.

The contractors work on a £2 billion outsourcing agreement, signed by the BBC five years ago after the sale of its own technology wing. Siemens provides all IT, technology and transmission services to the broadcaster.

Calling the pay freeze and redundancies a “double whammy” for staff, Bectu said it was “not even as if a pay freeze is safeguarding jobs”. The ballot runs until 19 March.

Suresh Chawla, national official at Bectu, criticised the pay freezes. “Whilst colleagues within the BBC, and in other service partner companies, are receiving modest pay increases and with inflation now hitting 3.7 percent, Siemens’ position is untenable,” he said.

The trade union had “no option but to ballot our members for industrial action”, he said, urging Siemens to return to talks.

It is not the first time the staff have considered strikes. Three years ago, around 3,400 IT and business processing staff employed by outsourcing firm Siemens secured four percent pay rises after threatening industrial action.

Siemens’ work at the BBC has also been heavily criticised in the past. In 2007, the BBC set up a technology partnership board to monitor the outsourcer, following a report by MPs that revealed 60 percent of the key technology projects in the deal’s first year suffered delays or went over budget.

Yahoo finally announces deal to integrate Twitter

February 25th, 2010

Yahoo announced a new partnership with Twitter this morning.

Twitter will be integrated into a number of Yahoo products. Users will be able to update their statuses from Yahoo and share Yahoo stories in their Twitter streams directly.

Yahoo already has a similar deal with Facebook, and will now offer its users the ability to update statuses on both networks simultaneously, as they would on an aggregator like TweetDeck. This makes sense as part of Yahoo’s model of being “your home on the Internet.”

Most of the integration will be rolled out later this year. The immediate impact is that search results from Yahoo now include real time results from Twitter’s feed. The feature works exactly as it does on Google and Bing. Since Yahoo will soon be outsourcing search to Microsoft, which already has a Twitter deal, this is nothing Yahoo users weren’t expecting.

Wireless management saves money, IT outsourcing users told

February 25th, 2010

Closer management of wireless services can result in savings of between ten and 35 per cent for companies, IT outsourcing users have been told.

Industry analyst Gartner pointed out that businesses are expected to adopt increasingly sophisticated mobile devices in the coming year, although many could neglect to draft adequate policies to deal with this.

Phil Redman, research vice president at Gartner, explained that problems can occur when wireless telephony services are introduced on an ad-hoc basis, leading to more expense than is necessary.

“A good method to ensure a strong policy is to incorporate a centralised team across IT that will be impacted by mobile and wireless decisions. This team can strategise for the strongest and widest policy,” he commented.

Mr Redman also pointed out that costs can be reduced if mobile devices, operating system platforms and form factors are standardised.

Last week, Mobile Choice magazine editor Natasha Stokes claimed that there will be a rapid expansion in the smartphone security market, as uptake of the devices increases in the coming years.
