March 26th, 2010

PERI Software, based in New Jersey announced today it has open new offices in the Wells Fargo Tower in the business district of downtown Los Angeles to offer its advanced global business solutions to a high demand market in Southern California.

“After servicing clients in California and on the West Coast, we realized it was vital to bring
our services closer to a rapidly growing technology market,” explained President
and CEO Sarav Periasamy, PERI Software. “We have just opened an office here, because we believe Los Angeles leads the Pacific Rim in just about every industry and we want to help business grow to meet the technology needs of regional and international markets.”

A recent SoCal economic forecast finds that technology, tourism and international trade will be the leading industries to the economic recovery. Research reveals that the business demand for technology products was very weak in the first three quarters of 2009, when businesses were reducing costs drastically in order to survive the recession. But, demand picked up noticeably during the fourth quarter and sales of technology products held up better on the consumer side.

PERI delivers technology-based business solutions to help organizations worldwide control costs and cultivate growth by drawing on our deep industry expertise,” said Periasamy. “We help companies facing growing pains by blending a strategic design, proven technology, and timely delivery of creative solutions that brings the best returns on IT investments.”

PERI is a global consulting and technology services company specializing in industry-specific solutions, strategic outsourcing and integration services. The company was founded in 1999, and has grown to more than 700 employees worldwide. In addition to the new Los Angeles office, it also has offices in San Jose, offshore facilities in Chennai, India and the PERI headquarters in Newark, NJ.

“Technology will be one of the strongest industries to lead the recovery,” said Periasamy. “PERI is confident that we can play a vital role in meeting the technology industry business solutions needs, which is why we have expanded in Los Angeles.”

Sales of technology products held up better on the consumer side according to published reports. Purchases of products like computers, flat TV, and cell phones increased last year despite the recession and will continue to grow in 2010.

“There is always a demand for the well-designed personal gadgets like iPods and smart cell phones with media players, but business is in transition to smart technology products, too, of which we produce so business can cut costs and get the job done in less time,” said Periasamy. “We are constantly hiring software engineers and employees to meet growing technology demands.”

Indian firms hope to cash in on new U.S. healthcare law

March 26th, 2010

Indian firms hope to cash in on the new U.S. healthcare law signed this week by President Barack Obama.

According to the Washington Post, Indian companies are working with U.S. insurers handling back-office operations, including claims processing, supply management and transcription services.

The extension of healthcare to 32 million Americans over the next decade will mean that the need for those services will grow, executives here said.

“The health-care reform bill is a very, very big opportunity for us,” said Ananda Mukerji, managing director of Firstsource Solutions.

He said about 40 percent of the company’s business comes from dozens of U.S. hospitals and insurance companies.

“A big part of what we do for the American companies is eligibility assessment services, where we assess eligibility of a patient for the Medicare program. We also work with hospitals to submit claims and enroll new patients. With the new bill, all this work will increase,” he said.

The new law requires some insurance companies to devote more of the premiums they receive to direct healthcare and away from administrative costs.

“The healthcare law will create a huge pressure on American insurance companies to cut costs,” said Rana Mehta, vice president of health care at Technopak, an independent consultancy firm in Gurgaon.

“Ultimately it is a business decision to outsource. All this new work has to go somewhere, and India will gain,” Mehta said.

India’s outsourcing industry was shaken last year when President Obama declared that he wanted to change “a tax code that says you should pay lower taxes if you a create job in Bangalore, India, than if you create one in Buffalo, New York.”

It has responded with new efforts to reach out to U.S. workers.

In anticipation of the healthcare law, many Indian companies are establishing a toehold in the United States by negotiating mergers and acquisitions in recent months.

This month, Patni Computer Systems, India’s sixth largest IT firm, set up an office in El Paso after a multimillion dollar deal with a U.S. health care company.

March 26th, 2010

Wipro unveiled a global delivery centre at Curitiba in Brazil to serve its global and near-shore clients, the Indian software major said on Thursday.

Though Wipro’s global IT services business division has been operating in Brazil since 2006, the new centre will enable it to diversify its footprint globally.

“The Curitiba centre will serve as the regional headquarters for our offices located across the Latin American region at Sao Paulo in Brazil and Buenos Aires in Argentina,” the company said in a statement.

With 350 employees, the centre, inaugurated by Curitiba mayor Beto Richa in presence of Indian consul general Jeitendra K. Tripathi, will extend IT and BPO (business process outsourcing) services and serve about 20 clients in the region.

“Brazil is an important market for domestic and international business. Our local and global customers will benefit from our quality processes, innovative solutions and a global delivery model,” Wipro director for Latin America Fernando Estrazulas said.

Sleuths outsourcing phone tapping?

March 26th, 2010

The State intelligence wing has allegedly outsourced phone surveillance and tapping to a private firm, according to a complaint by the Tamil Nadu Peoples Rights Forum.
The private firm, it alleged, provides integrated solutions for security for networking, and a wide range of equipment for law enforcement agencies.
Both the intelligence chief and the private firm denied the allegations.
State intelligence chief Jaffer Sait said, “it is false and not possible.” For his part, the technical head of the firm said they were not involved in surveillance.
“We are not dealing with any security agency.” The allegations come in the wake of charges against another private firm in 2008 after which the Madras High Court issued a notice to the State government seeking its response.
“The monitoring or tapping of mobile phones of VIPs in the State is done in an illegal manner and is a clear violation of Articles 19 (1) and 21 of the Constitution,” P Pugalenthi, secretary of the forum stated in the complaint to the principal secretary to the government.
He alleged that the firm was paid for professional services out of the ‘secret funds’ allotted to the intelligence department by the State government.
“There is absolutely no audit for the secret funds spent by the intelligence agencies. The secretly recorded conversations are being used to blackmail people and extract money from them,” Pugalenthi alleged.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) sources told Express they allow law enforcement agencies to intercept calls of any suspect after the request comes through the proper channel and is documented. “But if they outsource the work then it is their call. I don’t know if they have the Centre’s permission to do so. Personally, I feel it should not be allowed.”

Outsourcing to India raises UK storm

March 26th, 2010

A major hospital in the north-east England town of Warrington is the latest British health centre to consider off-shoring medical transcription to India to cut costs, sparking a welter of protest from union leaders.

The Warrington and Halton Hospitals (NHS) Foundation Trust’s administration review group has discussed a pilot scheme to launch an offshore transcription trial, which involves health letters being typed in India before being returned to the UK.

The hospital trust’s officials are due to meet representatives of Care Technologies India, a medical transcription service, to discuss the transcription trial.

The talks follow a hospital review which is looking at new methods of delivering typing tasks as a way of saving money.

A hospital spokesman confirmed that new technologies were being introduced and said: “These include electronic transcription services, digital dictation and electronic reporting, all of which have come in to speed up patient correspondence”.

“One of the options is a remote transcription services where basic typing correspondence is handled by outside organisations. The review is looking at these options and seeing if they will have any benefit to us and the review will explore these in more detail,” he added.

Public services union ‘Unison’ condemned the move. Regional organiser Bill Kelly said: “The union is opposed to this initiative. It could lead to lapses in patient confidentiality and mistakes might be made when information is relayed electronically. Transferring the service also means that jobs will be under threat.”

BT positioned in leaders quadrant in three key reports

March 26th, 2010

BT today announced that its Global Services unit is positioned in the Leaders quadrant in three key Gartner Magic Quadrants: the Global Network Service Providers1, the Pan-European Network Service Providers2 and the Magic Quadrant for Communications Outsourcing and Professional Services, Worldwide.3
Jeff Kelly, CEO BT Global Services, said, We are delighted that Gartner recognises BT as a leader in these key Quadrants. The areas covered by the reports are at the heart of our customers’ needs. We feel this recognition is based on our network management and outsourcing experience, the quality of our service and portfolio, as well as on our understanding of the dynamics needed to deliver networked IT services successfully. I’m particularly proud that BT Global Services is recognised for its vision and its ICT capabilities.”
In its Global Network Service Providers (NSP) report, Gartner defines leaders as companies that “have a full portfolio of voice and data products, coupled with above-average service and support, wide global coverage and competitive pricing. They have a strong vision that includes adopting more information and communication technology (ICT) capacity which is a strategy they articulate clearly and openly.
In its Pan-European Network Service Provider (NSP) report, Gartner says leaders “have a full portfolio of voice and data services, including relatively new offerings in areas such as unified communications and Ethernet services. These services will be delivered with good quality across a wide area of coverage at competitive prices by account teams that are typically closer to the customer. Leaders have a strong vision of the market and their role in it, and they will typically be able to address a wider range of customers (in terms of size, geography and service requirements) with their service offerings than others in this Magic Quadrant.”
In its Communications Outsourcing and Professional Services (COPS) report, Gartner states that the companies in the leaders quadrant “affect competitors by: enabling technology and IT service offerings; their focus on the enterprise and targeted industry segments; and their capability to differentiate on value, price and service levels to be first to market with relevant products. Vendors in the Leaders quadrant are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are building competencies to sustain their leadership positions in the market. Vendor and customer experience weigh heavily in the Leaders quadrant. All these vendors have demonstrated that they have significant network management and outsourcing experience and understand the dynamics needed to deliver network-centric IT services successfully.”
