Offshoring, Outsourcing terms negative: NASSCOM

May 28th, 2010

India might well be considered as one of the most preferred outsourcing destinations worldwide but the country’s IT industry lobby group NASSCOM feels terms such as “offshoring” and “outsourcing” have negative implications in some global markets.

“These terms have apparent “negative connotations” in some of the mature markets such as the US. I think we have to remove these from our vocabulary”, President of National Association of Software and Services Companies  Som Mittal said.

Responding to a question on whether India should change strategy vis-a-vis ‘desi’ engineering and R & D services market here, he said usage of terms like “outsourcing” has “hurt” India’s software industry overseas.

Mittal argued that offshoring is also a business, citing the example that Nokia is designing products in India, which is also a market for the telecom company.

“These debates  are in the mind”, he observed.

Apart from using terms like “offshoring” and “outsourcing”, the term “services” should also be removed from the vocabulary, Krishna Mikkilineni, President of Honeywell Technologies said, adding “This is engineering (no need to add services).”

Using software outsourcing and lean management principles; energy efficiency can be at the top of the agenda

May 28th, 2010

The current economic climate is putting a massive strain and pressure on the priorities of businesses large and small. In these conditions it is no wonder that the priorities of most have been streamlined and reduced to core functions. What was once a nice idea is no longer allowed if there is no immediate profit benefit to the company concerned. This reduction in areas of commitment for most businesses has led some of the most significant movements of the last few years on the side-lines, notably energy efficiency and carbon usage reduction initiatives. Although understandable it can be very easily shown that this is a short-sighted approach.

The direct correlation between resources used and cost to the business is explicit. Having said this, without a plan to move forward with reducing energy use and carbon footprint the whole idea can seem better left alone until brighter times return. This is totally understandable and usually comes from a failure to quantify outcomes and cost savings. Any manager on restricted budgets will want to have two vital pieces of information before committing budget resources to a project. These are “How much?” and “How long?” The lack of expertise in these fields means that many companies will, by necessity, leave this to one side in favour of more quantifiable projects and budgetary commitments.

The use of a Lean management expert in these situations can force a break in the cycle of the unknown and allow a glimpse of the outcomes to be expected. Once a plan has clearly defined outcomes then the rest of the process can be followed as in any project. The key here is the wisdom to engage outside help at the correct time and of the correct type. Lean consulting companies like Bristol’s Suaju Ltd, have a wealth of experience of defining outcomes and laying out a plan at project inception. Using expertise like this can put energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction back on the agenda by defining, in real terms, the amounts that can be saved by taking a course of action. For instance, they may define your core functions in energy usage and cost to the business. If this core business function were to be, say, software production, the consultant may suggest that software outsourcing be a more cost effective route, either from an energetic or a company resources point of view. Even if this course of action can be shown to save only one pound more than the total cost of the project then the company concerned can confidently put energy saving and carbon usage reduction back on the agenda and stand proud, out in the world where all too many are ignoring this critical path to save the reduction in lifestyle of future generations.

Many will still say that with the economy being the way it is they cannot take on board new initiatives, but those that have the insight and determination to go the extra mile can gain cost savings and kudos in the wider community. In these days of social marketing and peer recommendation, any company that can gain the extra respect of the public at large whilst continuing with its core functions will reap the financial rewards, in the long term certainly but in the short term also.

Stablenet IT integration & outsourcing earns microsoft’s small business specialist certification

May 28th, 2010

Over the next year, Microsoft will release the largest wave of new products in its history, and partners like Stablenet, will be required to possess in-depth knowledge for implementation of the new technologies. The new Partner Network, which is the next evolution of the Microsoft Partner Program, provides numerous opportunities for partners to strengthen their capabilities. Partners enrolling in the Partner Network select the membership option that best matches their qualifications and business goals. Certification as a Small Business Specialist is one of those options, and the one that Stablenet recently acquired by displaying proven competency in planning and building solutions for their small business customers.

Stablenet has been a Microsoft Certified Partner since 1998. The new certification makes them a member of an elite community worldwide that is better qualified to help small businesses with the optimization and support of Microsoft’s innovative products. Stablenet’s engineers are well prepared for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services, Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager. Customers are turning to Stablenet for help in optimizing existing technologies that can be complemented by cost-effective, rapid innovation.

Case Study: Stablenet installed Microsoft’s Small Business Server for American Products’ almost 50 users; this allows the customer to utilize the worldwide leading email and collaboration server, Exchange; it also provides them SharePoint Server that allows the company’s users to keep all documents up to date and make sure they’re always working with the latest edition of a document. Stablenet was most recently integrated Microsoft’s 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services servers (renamed from 2008 Terminal Server) to give the company desktop virtualization, which in essence sped up their brand new to five-year-old PCs, to almost the speed of the servers running the Virtualized applications. The speed increase was per PC was approximately 20 – 200% for the primary ERP application used by the customer.

“I couldn’t do business without them. We rely heavily on Stablenet to monitor the health of our connectivity between branches. They make sure it all works properly. I don’t have to worry about hiccups in our system that may take us offline; I can rest assured that as long as there isn’t a major power outage, there won’t be problems. I don’t have to worry and that’s a big load off of me. I would recommend Stablenet to anyone.” – Hal Cross, American Products, Inc.

May 28th, 2010

SulAmerica has signed a new agreement with IBM Brazil to manage its business processes for the company’s Life and Pension Insurance unit. IBM will be responsible for the back office activities of both areas, including issuing policies, registration updates, document transfers and claim management. The 12-year agreement signed in April 2010 is valued at more than $200 million.

The agreement also covers information technology (IT) infrastructure services, maintenance of legacy applications, construction of a dedicated service center in the city of Barueri and the hiring of professionals currently allocated to the insurance company’s Life and Pension operations. In order to maintain service continuity, IBM Brazil will also support the management of current applications.

As a result of this deal, IBM and Control Consultoria, an IBM Business Partner, will develop a new system to process insurance operations for Life and Pension for the Brazilian market. According to Renato Russo, SulAmerica Life and Pension Vice President, “This tool will strengthen the insurance company’s goals to reach excellence levels in providing services to its customers and higher flexibility in product development. Through this contract, SulAmerica expects to achieve significant cost savings within the first year of the contract.”

“This is a pioneer project in Latin America. For the first time, an insurance company is outsourcing activities directly related to business of this scope. Under the initiative, many benefits are expected, such as cost reduction, greater efficiency and agility due to the processes automation, expanding the company’s competitive advantage,” said Eduardo Bandeira de Mello Joia, IBM Brazil Vice President, responsible for Strategic Business. “In addition, the company’s employees will be able to dedicate themselves to more strategic initiatives, such as innovative projects improving customers relationship, bringing additional intelligence, expertise and insight into the business.”

The business relationship between SulAmerica and IBM goes back many years, and in 2005, SulAmerica strengthened it by choosing IBM Brazil to manage its information technology infrastructure. The company was the first insurance company in Latin America to sign a contract with this kind of coverage and complexity.

IBM Managed Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) offers innovative options to combine process, people and technology in outsourced delivery models that create real business value.
