Post-RBS deal, tesco outsourcers more work to its Indian unit

May 27th, 2010

New Delhi: The India back-office unit of Tesco Plc, the world’s third largest retailer, is increasingly getting more work from the parent unit that offers banking and insurance services, besides selling credit cards.

This follows Tesco’s buyout of Royal Bank of Scotland’s (RBS) 50% stake in their joint venture Tesco Personal Finance (TPF), the unit from which Bangalore-based Tesco Hindustan Services Centre (THSC) is getting back-office and analytics business.

Earlier, all the processes were being handled by RBS in the UK itself, said Sandeep Dhar, chief executive of the unit.

Currently, the process of transition is going on from RBS to Tesco and we are simultaneously also moving work to India,” he said. Tesco bought out RBS’ stake in TPF in a £950 million deal in July last year.

Though it could take around three-five years for the complete transition of operations from the UK to India, it could add significantly to the revenue of the local centre.

Dhar refused to say how much money was involved. “Currently, the operations are very small but we continue to grow our work both on the retail and the banking front,” he said.

For the last six months, the 4,200 people strong captive centre in India has branched out to also provide testing and remote infrastructure management (RIM) services for banking operations while it continues to service and increase outsourcing work from retail operations.
Testing services aim to check the feasibility of applications built for a particular operation, while RIM involves managing computers, data centres and servers remotely from any location in the world. Dhar said the new business could also involve application development. Consolidation in the banking industry has led to more work being contracted out to India.

After the several mergers and acquisitions in the banking space especially in the US over the last year, we have seen a lot of shift happening to India,” said Ambarish Dasgupta, executive director, PricewaterhouseCoopers, a consultancy. He added that the trend will continue along with several new areas opening up for Indian outsourcing companies.

TPF has 6.2 million customer accounts across all products and it operates 130 in-store travel bureaus and 2,800 automated teller machines. The bank reported revenue of £860 million and a trading profit of £250 million for the fiscal ended February.

Set up in 2004, currently 50% of THSC’s revenue comes from providing RIM services for retail operations, with the rest from finance and accounting work, design services along with market forecasting and research. The centre also does payroll processing for Tesco’s 470,000-strong workforce.

Unchaining a creative approach to labor shortage with prison BPO center.

May 27th, 2010

Last month I wrote about some of India’s challenges in retaining its position as the world’s go-to location for offshoring. While India (and China too, which is also mentioned in my post) have huge populations, many people still live in rural areas that lack the educational opportunities and infrastructure needed to produce workers to fill positions at outsourcing companies.

India’s government and some private companies are trying to address this shortfall with initiatives designed to create outsourcing jobs in some of the country’s rural areas. When I interviewed Sridhar Vembu, CEO of AdventNet, the company behind the Zoho suite of online productivity applications, he described his company’s success in recruiting Indian students right of out high school. The company gets highly passionate employees with a strong commitment to their employer, who are willing to try lots of different roles. The primary disadvantage of the program, Vembu told me, is that it’s tough to achieve on any large scale. Still, I thought it was a very creative approach.

Indian services company Radiant Info Systems, is trying a similarly creative approach, albeit one that some people might see as a little crazy. (I know some of the colleagues who forwarded the story to me are among them!) As Network World reports, the company is setting up a BPO center at the Cherlapally Central Jail in India’s Andhra Pradesh state. Radiant Info Systems executive C. Narayanacharyulu said about 200 inmates who have at least a high school degree will receive two to three months of training to prepare them to do data entry and other back-office tasks.

The jail will provide the space for the center, while Radiant will provide computers and the necessary communications infrastructure. The prisoners will receive between 100 Indian rupees (US$2.20) to 150 rupees a day, far more than the 15 rupees a day paid to other prisoners. Presumably, some of the inmates will use their new skills to seek employment in the outsourcing industry when they are released from jail. Both the Radiant executive and Andhra Pradesh’s director general of prisons, who is also interviewed in the article, say they are interested in expanding the program to other prisons.

The program will focus on the local market, at least initially. I assume this is due to the potentially negative public relations that could result from having prisoners doing work for companies from other countries. After all, there is considerable pushback from some quarters for using any offshore employees. And I assume Radiant will be careful about ensuring prisoners have no access to sensitive data. If not, then maybe the company is crazy.

Still, I think it’s quite progressive to give inmates a chance to learn skills for which plenty of jobs are available. This is largely lacking in U.S.. prisons, which rarely offer more than bare-bones general education courses taught by volunteers. Remember CEO Randall Stephenson’s comment that AT&T had trouble finding enough qualified folks to fill some of the technical support positions it moved from India back to the United States? Prisoners with a genuine desire to better themselves would seem to be good candidates for training to perform exactly those kinds of jobs.

BPO meeting in Cebu on June 22

May 27th, 2010

STAKEHOLDERS in the country’s growing information and communication technology (ICT) as well as the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry meet in Cebu on June 22 to discuss growth areas.

Conference chairman Jerry Rapes, said the biggest challenge for Cebu was to make it the ideal hub for ICT and the BPO industry.

“We are constantly looking for opportunities to bring higher-value activities to Cebu to highlight our potential,” Rapes, said.

The conference, part of the Cebu Business Month celebration of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlights the three-growth areas of the local economy—ICT, tourism and small businesses.

One of the objectives of the conference is to get the stakeholders of the industry to build a broader road map. The conference is hoped to showcase successes of the players and forge stronger ties between the stakeholders in the industry and those in the government and academe.

Growth areas for Cebu include cloud-computing, considering the growing competence of the products of local universities, Rapes said.

He also identified health care, animation and gaming as well as interactive mobile applications as a growing sector in Cebu. “In terms of competence and infrastructure, Cebu is already equal with the bigger cities,” Rapes said.

It is estimated that the ICT and BPO industries in Metro Cebu employ some 50,000 workers or roughly 20 percent of the country’s $7-billion industry. Rapes said there is still plenty of room for growth and this aspect will be identified in the congress.

Outsourcing seo vs gambling with in house seo

May 27th, 2010

So your company has determined to embark on a web based marketing campaign to spice up sales. With a lot advertising clatter filling up the Web today, you determine to rent someone who can convey your corporation to the forefront from search engine wrangling, the companies of an web optimization expert. At this point, you’ll certainly be faced with a dilemma, whether or not to outsource your website positioning needs or set up a new segment inside your company, or to go for an in-house SEO department. Such downside has been argued over and addressed by many specialists either in the extra ultimate academic perspective or pragmatic business-management approach, every espousing outsourcing SEO wants is the better choice or otherwise. All technical arguments apart, experience has proved that outsourcing your search engine optimisation wants with a confirmed expert is the better choice.

Regardless of what almost everybody says, not just anyone may be an web optimization expert. It is core competency and requires certain expertise and ability, particularly creativity, analysis, data of the goal market, to name a few. Granted, expertise is innate; this doesn’t imply someone whom you rent who has that as the in-house search engine optimization ‘knowledgeable’ can produce the increased revenue your company desires. The above-talked about expertise are required and those can only be developed over time. If your organization is embarking on that online marketing campaign with the expectation of fast outcomes, you definitely wouldn’t have the time to wait for that newly hired talent to blossom into the website positioning knowledgeable you require. search engine optimisation firms, nevertheless, already have within their arsenal individuals who might be rightfully referred to as website positioning experts. These are individuals have each the talent and expertise required by firms that depend on search engine marketing to go well with their business needs. Firms which provide SEO providers to corporations in search of to outsource their wants have made it their enterprise to develop the individuals who possess the fitting talent set so that they may deliver particular results.

Most corporations fail to grasp the dent to their finances which could be brought on by the establishment of an In House SEO. That is most unfortunate since most corporations set up in house search engine marketing segments exactly as a value-slicing measure. The cost of hiring the companies of a seasoned SEO agency could be ten times greater than the price of hiring a beginner as an in house search engine optimization employee. It bears stressing, however, that quality search engine optimization services may be done in a “one-time-big-time” fashion. SEO professional is available in, does his work, and you have a website which ranks top in all search engines. Choosing the proper web optimization firm is, after all, an integral selection on your company in an effort to be assured of the standard of the work. That is in stark contrast to hiring in house search engine marketing employees, you have to spend money and time for coaching and not be assured of the quality of his work. It has already been pressured that not everybody could be an search engine optimisation expert. In any case, the prices of creating an in house web optimization section are heavier for the company within the long run.

It’s likewise prudent for companies to withhold disbelief after they select to outsource their search engine optimization needs. website positioning isn’t some sort of magical pill which suddenly will increase online revenues to 200%. Advocates for in-house search engine optimization services attribute this to the actual fact outsourced services lack the personal understanding of each the company and its product hence the shortage of stellar results. However, it’s obligatory to remember how search engine optimization are supposed to assist companies. What SEO does is to place your company ahead of rivals if a potential buyer searches on your product, it does not make him click on the ‘buy’ button on your site. If after hiring the companies of an web optimization, the quantity of online sales don’t decide up, consider your product and site as a complete before you blame the poor search engine optimization service provider. See in case your web site?s content material is consumer and reader friendly and if your product is one thing a customer would truly want.

There are so many issues proponents of in home web optimization companies can say to you, but in the end, you solely have to ask yourself this “Does my firm must have specialized in web optimization providers?” Likelihood is your answer is in the negative. You’re promoting merchandise, not SEO services. Furthermore, having an in house search engine optimization worker will not be vital because the work might be done in a one-time trend and you?re not likely assured of the standard of his work, unless you pirate an skilled website positioning expert as a everlasting employee which would then lead again to the argument that search engine optimization work is primarily a one-time thing. Really, the higher selection is to outsource your website positioning needs, until after all, you actually wish to turn out to be an search engine optimisation firm.

Outsourcing: Its effects on the u.s economy and leadership

May 27th, 2010

Outsourcing or off sourcing is a new trend among companies that operate and facilitate operations out of the United States. These companies use outsourcing as a way to cut costs and use cheaper labor by subcontracting to foreign companies or setting up offices in foreign countries. This takes away much needed jobs from the American economy. The decision to outsource is often made in the interest of lowering firm costs, redirecting or conserving energy directed at the competencies of a particular business, or to make more efficient use of labor, capital, technology and resources. . Business segments typically outsourced include information technology, human resources, facilities and real estate management, and accounting. Many companies also outsource customer support and call center functions like telemarketing, customer services, market research, manufacturing and engineering.

Outsourcing is not the only way that companies cut costs though. The other way that these companies shift jobs away is by becoming offshore companies. Offshore Outsourcing is when a company takes its business to another country and sets up operations outside its main office. The companies choose to move certain aspects of their business to developing countries where wages and labor are cheaper. Many of these Outsourced and offshore jobs go to young people in those developing countries who look for placement in their country’s job sector. For Example, Dell Computers is based, owned and operated in the U.S but will choose to outsource jobs and create offshore jobs in its customer service and call center departments. This allows Dell to get more “bank for their buck” by eliminating the wage restrictions of the U.S and hiring cheaper labor. This move cuts costs to the company while still addressing the needs of the consumer.

As the outsourcing and offshore job practices are becoming more common among these large corporations and conglomerates that reside in the United States, the United States economy is suffering and beginning to feel the effect behind the corporations’ cost cutting maneuvers. Instead of those same jobs being offered to the American public, they are quickly shifted to a developing country in need of a new job market. Places such as India and England are now benefiting from these corporations’ decisions to move elsewhere in search of cheaper labor.

On the other hand, it is a common rule of business to attempt to keep costs at a minimum and all the while to raise capital. It allows for the company to grow at a more rapid rate. When companies keep labor costs down, they are able to use the additional resources in the operating budget.

Offshore jobs and outsourcing can also be detrimental to the economy that gets involved with such practices because the outsourcing can be in flux unless kept to a strict contract or agreement. Moreover, a company can decide to move to another developing country at any time and set up business and resources for even cheaper labor and training.

Off-shoring is not popular among the private sector because it takes jobs away from the American People. While Americans fight to maintain and keep jobs, it is also up to the Government to make sure that these companies don’t take their business elsewhere in search of cheaper labor and lighter labor regulations. Many business people might dispute this but I believe that the government must regulate these companies in order for our economy to thrive. If the government doesn’t determine fair labor practices than companies would be able to set any standard they want for their employees. It all revolves back into the economy which allows for more jobs to be created instead of being placed elsewhere. It is the job of the Government to make sure the economy is steady for the livelihood of the country. If there is no governing board or regulations to oversee company’s business practices then there would be no success in the economy. Every company would possibly be monopolies and set standards way above and or below means. The companies that base operations out of off-shore locations do not worry about labor regulation or practices. This allows the companies to overlook the integrity and policies of the company in favor of profits. For Example, the Great Depression that plagued the United States during the latter part of the 1920’s and early 1930’s was brought along by the reckless judgment of companies and investors. Companies were allowing money to be poured into stocks of companies and precious metals. Then, when companies pulled their interest in those stocks and precious metals the stock market crashed causing consumers and companies to lose vast amounts of money. The government had to step in and make sure that this never happened to the American economy. The government setup regulatory institutions such as the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC act of 1934) to make sure the public interest were protected.

Is the outsourcing of jobs the cause to blame for our slow economy? You cannot say for sure but it has something to do with it. When there are fewer jobs for the American people, there is less money being spent on goods, services, and items that fuel the American economy. These multinational corporations also impact the offshore locations where they set up operations. Companies such as Dell and Microsoft use off shoring and outsourcing to cut the costs but they pump money back into those countries allowing the countries’ people to spend the money they earn on the products and services the companies provide. Outsourcing and off-shoring can be a way of companies and corporations’ to expand their capital and revenue. If done correctly, outsourcing can be a benefit. However, Outsourcing especially to other countries can hurt the American economy and the American people.

This year is a pivotal year to the livelihood of a World Power and Economic Power, which is the United States. There has been a lull over the economy for the last eight years with the Nation’s overwhelming aptitude for taking on debts as result of funding downtrodden wars. The year 2008 marks a race for a new face in the oval office. With this being an election year, there are two candidates vying for the position: Barack Obama (democrat) and John McCain (republican). These two opponents are ready to tackle the nation’s economic problems head on, albeit in different ways. Obama feels that we should rebuild the nation from the ground up, meaning from infrastructure (highways, roads, airports etc.) to the oval office. Obama has already put his plans in motion by introducing the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 to provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military. (Barack Obama)

Obama’s competitor John McCain has a similar plan in place. According to JohnMcCain.com, “John McCain Will Reduce The Federal Corporate Tax Rate To 25 Percent From 35 Percent. John McCain believes the taxes we impose on American companies should be no higher than the average rate our major trading partners impose on theirs. We currently have the second-highest combined corporate-tax rate in the industrialized world, and it is driving many businesses and the jobs they create overseas.” (JohnMcCain)

This is what little each candidate has to offer regarding the outsourcing of jobs and a plan to prevent the American economy and worker to succumbing jobs to outsourcing. I’m sure there will be more said and more developments as we get closer to Election Day. Hopefully, either candidate can turn the outsourcing trend around while creating more jobs for the American people.
