IT services contracts quarterly analysis, Q1 2010

The global economic crisis had a major impact on outsourcing activity last year, with 2009 ranking as one of the worst for IT services contract signings since Ovum began collecting data in 2000. Data gathered in the first quarter of 2010 suggests that while there are reasons for cautious optimism, the slump is not yet over. The number of deals tracked by Ovum’s IT Services Contracts Analytics in the three months to the end of March fell to its lowest level since 2007, while quarterly total contract value (TCV) was only boosted by a handful of major public-sector awards. The overall IT services market remains overly reliant on central-government clients in the US and UK, with a notable lack of activity in key vertical markets such as financial services.

Reseller’n'hosting specialist offshores jobs

2e2, which recently bought Morse, is considering sending its support desk jobs to India.

Codenamed ‘Project Victoria’, the process is due to kick off after 25 July when 2e2 should have finished due diligence with Patni – the company to which it is outsourcing the outsourcing.

Patni will take on 2e2 support staff except for level 1 – about 150 jobs. It’s expected the jobs will stay in the UK for three months but that staff will then be made redundant and the work moved to India. So 2e2 won’t actually be making anyone redundant itself.

But Nick Grossman, group business development director at 2e2, said the process is far from finished.

He said: “This is genuinely up in the air right now, we’re looking at the feasibility of doing it and looking at a range of different blends – numbers could vary and which work we look at could vary.

“This is not a non-serious issue and it’s been contemplated for some time.”

Grossman said 2e2 is moving to offer more “transformational” projects which require it work with other companies with other skills. He said cost pressure from customers was another impetus and increased pressure to be more flexible in how it responds to customers.

2e2 customers include Pret a Manger, TieRack, Philips ServiceCentre, British Airways voice systems, Nuffield Health, ITV and Remploy.

The company, including Morse, turned over £414m in 2009.

2e2 is privately-owned, it employs 1,500 staff and boasts of 1,000 “customer facing service delivery and IT professionals. Its website says: “95 per cent of services delivered by 2e2’s onshore fulltime employees.”

Tieto, If P&C Insurance sign EUR160m IT outsourcing contract

Finnish insurer If P&C Insurance Holding Ltd, part of insurance and financial services group Sampo (HEL: SAMAS), has agreed to outsource its IT operations in the Nordic countries for five years to Finland-based IT consultancy Tieto Oyj (HEL: TIE1V), in a deal worth some EUR160m.

The co-operation between If and Tieto goes back to 2001, and at that time it covered only Finland, Tieto said today, adding that, during 2005, the co-operation expanded and If outsourced its server operations and end-user services in the Nordic countries.

The five-year delivery will be made in co-operation with Norwegian IT company Atea ASA (OSL: ATEA), which will contribute as a subcontractor on client services in end-user services, Tieto said today

AGIMO details Federal government data centre needs

The Federal Government has released a document that describes the desired characteristics of the data centres it will consider for outsourcing deals under its plan to consolidate the enterprise computing needs of its agencies.

The data centre consolidation plan, launched by Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner in March, is looking to consolidate most Federal Government agencies into larger, more modern third party data centre facilities for the next 15 years in an attempt to save the Government $1 billion.

The Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) has released a draft statement of requirement which sketches out what information data centre builders and existing providers should be asked to submit to be considered for the multi-million dollar outsourcing deals.

Being a consultation draft, the document is not overly prescriptive, but asks all the right questions about data centre capabilities at a level of detail that suggests the authors have done their research on data centre efficiency.

Tenderers are asked to detail their available floor room space, security credentials, level of redundancy, access to power, connectivity and water, cooling methodology, power efficiency – even the sizes of doors and loading docks.
