Infosys’s back office operations in Thailand would be shutdown, the company announced on Friday. The Bangkok operations to be shutdown is a small business unit with less than 50 employees.

“This is a very small operation…that was why it was shut down,” Senapathy Gopalakrishnan was quoted as saying.

The company said its move would also help in achieving better advantage by being closer to its customers.

“This move enables Infosys BPO and its clients to achieve scalable operations, better cost efficiencies and a strategic advantage of being closer to the customers of clients,” a statement said.

The employees of the Bangkok unit were given with the option to move to other Infosys units wherein many chose Infosys business units in China.

Infosys had acquired the Bangkok unit as a part of a deal with Philips in 2007, in which it also acquired other business operations of Philips in Poland and India.
