Bulk SMS and MMS ban hit enterprise messaging solution firms

September 28th, 2010

Enterprise messaging solution (EMS) companies are incurring losses daily due to the government’s ban on bulk short message services (SMS) and multi media services (MMS) across the country till Sep 30 after the Supreme Court deferred by a week its judgement in the Ayodhya land title suit.

The EMS companies provide a set of wireless and messaging solutions to network and content providers enabling them to kee in touch with their customers.

One such company, Unicel Technologies, says it is losing over Rs.15 to 20 lakh daily.

“If things continue like this we are likely to suffer a loss of Rs.1 crore till Sep 30,” said Vinay Aggarwal, managing director.

Unicel caters to around 20 BPO (business process outsourcing) companies and with this ban these companies will have to create more manpower to call its customers instead of messaging.

“A lot of critical messaging happens. Genuine as well as non genuine content everything has been banned,” said Aggarwal.

The company caters to over 500 enterprize customers.

“Enterprize solution companies such as Unicel technologies are incurring a huge loss as their core business is bulk SMSs unlike the telecom operators who are having far little trouble,” said Rajan Mattews, director general of cellular operators association of India (COAI).

However, profit margins of telecom operators would decline.

“Though it will be difficult to provide an exact data, the total loss that the industry is likely to suffer should be around Rs.3 to 4 crore,” said Mattews.

The COAI has requested the telecom department to relax the ban and allow essential messaging services to avoid inconvenience to the subscribers.

“These includes transaction alerts sent by banks to the mobile phones of their customers,” said Mattews.

The government had initially banned bulk SMS and MMS services till Saturday ahead of the Ayodhya verdict Sep 24, in a bid to check the spread of rumours or hateful messages. However, the Supreme Court Thursday postponed the verdict till Sep 28, resulting in an extension of the ban till Sep 30.

Offshore Outsourcing Is an Increasingly Popular Business Strategy

September 28th, 2010

A global CIO study from 2010 reveals that 90 percent of CIOs will be maintaining or increasing offshore outsourcing projects in 2010 and 2011. According to the UK-based IT staffing and managed services firm Harvey Nash, outsourcing has been greatly used during the recession and CIOs are inclined to continue using outsourced services.

In its 2010 Global CIO Survey, Nash surveyed 2,855 IT executives from around the world and found 62 percent outsource software-application development; 53 percent outsource software maintenance; and 53 percent outsource IT infrastructure services. Twenty-two percent outsource systems integration, 8 percent outsource BPO, 8 percent outsource HR BPO, and 6 percent outsource their entire IT department. Thirty-six percent of CIOs are increasing their budgets in 2011 for offshore outsourcing activities.

The rising star for offshore outsourcing is Eastern Europe, but India is still a major player. Vietnam, the Philippines and China are also seeing increased IT activity. Says the Harvey Nash report:

“The role of India in offshore outsourced programmes remains dominant, but the dominance is waning and the rise of Eastern Europe as a preferred hub, especially for European-based CIOs, is undeniable. More than one in ten global CIOs now undertakes offshore activity in Eastern Europe. That figure is significantly higher within those European countries closest to the region.”

Nearly half of CIOs—48 percent—spend 10 percent of their IT budget on outsourcing. Roughly a third of CIOs have their budgets cut for 2011; forty-three percent had declining budgets in 2010.

Key issues facing CIOs and the IT department include increasing operational efficiencies, cost savings, and improving business process. All three of these areas weighed heavily on the minds of CIOs, as more than 70 percent of them rated these highly. Other issues revealed by the survey include new-product development, entering new markets, improving price competitiveness, green IT and mobile commerce.

CIOs, according to this study, are looking for skills that lean heavily toward business acumen.

The top rated skill with the highest percentage of demand—44 percent—is business analysis, followed closely by project management (37 percent) and business relationship management (31 percent). Architecture (35 percent), IT strategy (28 percent), development (23 percent), testing (22 percent) and service management (21 percent) were eclipsed by skills that help the CIO work strategically with the business. The most surprising technology skill to fall in the bottom ring of demand in the study is security, at 16 percent.

Despite the cost savings, offshore outsourcing and hybrid models that mix onshore and offshore services come with their own set of issues. As the study points out, business culture and project expectations are not always on the same page. From the Harvey Nash report:

“For both CIOs and their outsourcing providers, the key statistic that continues to cause concern is a growing level of dissatisfaction with project management standards, despite the overall popularity of the offshore outsourcing model.”

Outsourcing,a positive approach for small businesses

September 28th, 2010

Outsourcing is the strategic use of outside resources to perform activities traditionally handled by internal staff and resources. Small business owners can outsource non-core functions to specialized and efficient service providers.

It is required of businesses to hire special contractors for particular types of work or to meet the demands put forth by sudden spurts in the workload. Recently, the trend of partnering with firms whose capabilities complement their own giving them an access to resources that were beyond their individual reach has come up.

The difference between simply subcontracting and outsourcing is that outsourcing involves the wholesale restructuring of the corporation around core competencies and outside relationships. As a consequence, has emerged a new class of skilled entrepreneurs ‘ the Virtual Assistants.

What is a Virtual Assistant? A Virtual Assistant (VA) is an independent entrepreneur providing administrative, creative and/or technical services. Utilizing advanced technological modes of communication and data delivery, a professional VA assists clients in his/her area of expertise from his/her own office.

A VA completes your projects using his or her own equipment, and carries out the work through email, fax, telephone and postal service. Therefore, the location of your VA is not important. This gives you a liberty to look for professionals best suited to your needs located anywhere on the globe. Since they’re paid only for time-on-task, businesses can hire several VAs in dispersed locations and have 24-hour support paying far less than an employee or temporary would cost for such comprehensive assistance.

The services offered by each VA differ according to his/her skills. The list of services includes general administration services, database and website development, graphic design, internet research, sales support, presentation preparation, telephone answering, bill payments, travel arrangements, bookkeeping, desktop publishing, computer training, medical/legal transcription’ the list is endless! Not all VAs offer all of these services. However, by being part of VA Networks, your VA can guarantee client satisfaction by a qualified VA.

If your VA cannot complete your task, he/she will find another VA who can. Why to outsource the work to a VA?

1. The primary benefit of outsourcing is economizing since the VA can do it cheaper. VAs only charge for actual time worked.

2. By outsourcing to a VA rather than hiring an in-office assistant, you will never need to pay employment insurance, vacation pay, sick pay, or contribute to retirement plans and worker’s compensation.

3. A VA has his/her own hardware, software, training, etc. thereby reducing your capital investment. So there is no wear and tear on your office equipment or a need for special equipment.

4. Engaging a VA gives you time allowing you to do what you do best. You can focus on delivering the higher value and service to your customers.

5. As skilled VAs are chosen to perform particular tasks, they can do it better as they do it all the time. It is their business.

6. Like you, VAs are entrepreneurs and understand the needs of businesses today, ensuring the success of their clients. VAs value each and every client; it is because of these clients that VAs can ensure the success of their own businesses.

7. The resources of the VA can give your business access to technical advances you would not normally have access to.

With modern day communication, projects can be accomplished without ever having to meet the client face to face. With the growing ease of the Internet, finding a VA almost anywhere in the world is quite simple to accomplish. More so in the developed nations like USA, Canada, Australia, UK and many other European countries the VA industry is highly organized. The potential of developing countries like India can too be exploited to provide skilled VA services.

Reasons why india is a favorite outsourcing hub

September 28th, 2010

The number of businesses in the United States and other countries that have outsourced jobs to India has been staggering. One of the main reasons behind this growing trend is the number of talented workers in India who are performing business tasks for a mere fraction of what they would cost in the West. Price is not the only factor. There are many other reasons why India is the prime choice for outsourcing.

The English Language

Due to British colonization, many Indians can speak fluent English. This is one big advantage that other Asian countries don’t have. No intepreters are required, there are fewer misunderstandings and business communication can flow freely. This is why the call center industry has exploded in India. Customers calling from Canada, the United States and Britain can make inquiries and voice their concerns with ease. Despite the use of different idioms, Westerners generally don’t have to worry that the person on the other end of the line will be speaking in an unintelligible language.

Highly Educated Workforce

The Indians have proven themselves to be quite adept at developing software, and the quality of the work is being recognized as meeting acceptable international standards. Western companies are also finding the Indians useful for performing other tasks relating to financial reports, accounting, tax processing, photo editing services and more. Computer literacy among Indian workers is high and this is what gives the country a leg up on the competition. Universities are adding more graduates to the pool of skilled workers each year and seeing as they are young, they can adapt to change more easily.

More Open to Doing Business

Up until reforms began in 1991, India was seen as an almost impossible market to crack. The License Raj was put in place after independence in 1947, and the rules were so confusing and hard to navigate that it’s no wonder the country’s economic progress was minimal. Indian leaders knew they would be in serious trouble unless they made some big changes quickly. Today, foreign investors are coming back to India in droves. Companies that were once prohibited from setting up operations are being allowed to enter the market. India’s legal system has been influenced by the British colonialists and Western businesspeople feel more comfortable in this type of environment.

A Matter of Geography

India is located in a rather convenient time zone. At about the same time as American workers are heading home, the Indians are waking up. Somebody in the U.S. who can’t work late can send jobs that need to be finished to India. By the next morning, they will be completed. This is great for productivity, because the work continues and fewer tasks are overlooked.

Give outsourcing a break

September 28th, 2010

Practically everyone is talking about technology or SEO outsourcing or offshoring. These have probably been the biggest tech topics for the past couple of years. Of course, for people in developed countries, outsourcing looks like a lot of skilled tech workers getting laid off. SEO outsourcing is much more than that. Once you take a step back and look at the larger issues, you will be able to truly appreciate the value of companies who outsource to the Philippines.

It’s hard to tell people who got laid off to take a step back and look at the situation from the viewpoint of large companies. Getting laid off is not something you can wax poetic about. However, there is a good reason for governments to allow SEO outsourcing, or any outsourcing for that matter. Sure, putting a cap on the number of jobs you outsource will protect local jobs in the short term, but in the long run, you are putting that company’s stability and economic contribution at risk.

When lower level jobs are outsourced, higher level jobs are left in the company’s home country. When companies outsource to the Philippines, they do not eliminate jobs in their home country. Instead, they improve the quality and evolution of available local jobs.

Losing lower-paying, seemingly menial jobs would mean that what would be left are those that actually have bigger bearing to the structure of the company as a whole. Instead of having one thousand jobs locally, 90% of which are in lower, entry-level positions, a company that will outsource SEO abroad can provide 600 jobs locally, 90% of which are management positions. This is not something that will happen overnight, but if the market changes now, it will happen soon.

International trade principles are also in play. Developed countries are consistently innovating. If a company in a developed country focuses on building one industry instead of just making enough money to survive (which happens when they do not outsource), they will be able to allocate resources for development and market research that are necessary for the company’s future. If a company “buys” outsourcing, then it has the opportunity to “sell” future products and services in the country it outsourced to (and the rest of the world). The cost that a company saves when making the decision to outsource to the Philippines can be used to back up research that can improve its processes and change the way it does business.

Instead of debating whether or not outsourcing steals local jobs or not and how it can be stopped, companies and governments should look into the future and see how outsourcing benefits global economics. That way, this strategy can be studied and used to benefit everyone.
