Hire americans in the us, narayana murthy tells it firms

October 29th, 2010

We should make ourselves less visible and ensure that the front end comprises local talent,” he said while addressing delegates at a conference organized by the All India Management Association (AIMA) here.

“When the Chinese came to India to set up power plants, the government rightly sought several guarantees.

So, if some of our own markets seek similar guarantees from us, what is wrong?

China earns more than $50 billion in exports, but have we heard any murmur about them in any of the markets they target,” Narayana Murthy asked the delegates.

For starters, they hire local talent to front-end their entry into a country.

Indian industry too should be toeing their line in this regard, he said while underscoring that we should make every effort to ensure that we make ourselves less visible in the country we enter with our products and hire local talent to do the work instead.

Elaborating on why Indian outsourcing has raised of other countries in the recent past, the Infosys co-founder said the problem lies with our youngsters of the day who believe that career growth is achieved only through an H1B Visa and a Green Card and that life ultimately is made only if one settles in the United States.

“There are many ways an employee can serve the company and the senior management should inculcate this belief in their employees.

Currently, they are scared of taking decisions of hiring local talent based on fears that it will create dissatisfaction among the Indian staff.

We need to take bold decisions and hire local talent, else we may end up killing the industry itself,” he warned.

If you were to check out the ratio of Indian employees in any of our companies that sets up shop overseas, you will find that more than 70 percent of them are people of Indian origin.

“Why wouldn’t the local people feel alienated by such a development.

It is up to our companies to lure local talent, which of course is not an easy job given the need for better brand building for our companies,” he said.

BPO to hire more employees to accommodate increasing clients

October 29th, 2010

Business process outsourcer Sitel Philippines said on Friday it is hiring an additional 4,000 people to meet increasing demand from its client base.

Sitel said it is hiring for its seven facilities in Mandaluyong City, Pasig City, Quezon City, and Baguio City to provide quality service to its clients, with accounts in sales and information technology.

At present, Sitel has more than 12,000 employees.

“Despite the economic downturn, Sitel has posted an increase in revenue and clients in 2010 which enabled the company to hire more people. We have new clients who went onboard this year and many of our existing clients have grown their businesses with us,” Sitel recruitment director Joan Laquindanum said in a statement.

The Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPAP) estimates direct employment in the outsourcing sector to hit 530,000 this year — about 19 percent higher than the 440,000 jobs the industry generated last year.

Early this week, the BPAP is projecting investments of $800 million annually from the private sector that can generate more than 200,000 jobs a year until 2016.

BPAP said it is “refocusing its talent development program” as the group sees the BPO’s non-voice segment to grow.

“Those in the healthcare, finance, and accounting will be important for our growth. They are in a better position to fill in the more than 216,000 jobs a year [in BPO],” BPAP president Oscar Sañez said.
