BPO, ICT remain economic growth drivers of Central Visayas

December 13th, 2010

The business process outsourcing, the information and communication technology industries and its related IT-enabled services remain the economic growth drivers of Central Visayas.

This was contained in a 1st semester Central Visayas Regional Economic Situationer that the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA-7) in the region distributed to the members during the last full council meeting of the Regional Development Council on December 10, 2010 at the Elizabeth Hotel, Cebu City.
The NEDA-7 report read that in the 1st semester of 2010, six (6) BPO companies?People support, Epson, Teletech, Convergys, Qualfon and Exist Global expanded their operations in the region.

The report added that there were also three (3) new BPO-ICT firms that opened in the region. IBM-Philippines, for instance expands its presence here via the opening of its global delivery center for application services in Cebu.

JP Morgan Chase & Co. and the Thakral Group opened their ICT facilities at Asiatown IT Park that would address the IT needs of businesses in Central Visayas.
Data from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) showed that as of May 2010, there are already 91 locators and over 44 call centers in nineteen (19) IT Parks or centers operating in the region.

Cebu’s Asiatown IT Park is the country’s second largest IT industry concentration. It has employed around 15,066 people with an estimated total compensation of over P1.4-Billion.

Some BPO companies are now looking at Negros Oriental for their expansion. The province is becoming a preferred location for provincial branch business operations, according to the Negros Oriental investment promotion center.

The Board of Investments (BOI) also reported that for the second half of 2010, twelve (12) projects are located in the region with an estimated investment cost of P1.30-Billion. This is higher compared to the P655-Million investment cost registered in the 1st semester of 2009, the BOI reported.

Data privacy measure to bolster PH’s top rank in BPO – Romulo

December 13th, 2010

The Philippines is expected to solidify its position as global leader in business process outsourcing (BPO) activities once Congress passes a special law securing personal data privacy, House Deputy Majority Leader and Pasig City Representative Roman Romulo said in a news release over the weekend.

“We are absolutely confident that more companies around the world will subcontract their business support jobs to Philippine providers once the proposed Act Protecting Individual Personal Data in Information and Communications Systems is decreed,” said Romulo, the bill’s author.

Romulo was referring to House Bill 1554, which seeks to regulate and establish fair practices in the gathering and use of an individual’s personal details in information-technology (IT) systems.

“We are very hopeful the bill will be passed soon, at least by the House initially,” Romulo said.

He said the measure would provide adequate safeguards against the potential misuse or mishandling of personal facts in IT-enabled services such as customer care and electronic data processing.

“This will sharpen the country’s competitive edge in BPO activities, besides reinforcing consumer trust and user confidence in electronic commerce,” Romulo said.

He pointed out that BPO providers handle a great deal of customer and account master files.

“Naturally, their principals wish to be assured that we have definite, predictable, and enforceable personal data privacy rules,” he said.

The principals of Philippine BPO subcontractors include some of the world’s largest banks, insurers, stockbrokers, hotel chains, airlines, travel operators, and newspaper publishers, as well as providers of health, telecommunication, Internet, and satellite or cable TV services.

According to IBM’s latest Global Locations Trend Annual Report, the Philippines emerged as the world’s largest recipient of new outsourcing business in 2009, edging out India.

“We are determined to support our BPO sector, which is remarkably labor-intensive. This is exactly what we need—relatively gainful and stable new jobs for our fresh college graduates and young professionals,” Romulo said.

Citing projections by industry groups, he said the country’s BPO activities have the potential to produce up to 700,000 additional full-time jobs over the next five years.

At present, the industry already employs some 600,000 workers in customer care; back offices; medical, legal and other data transcription; software development; animation; engineering design; and digital content services.

The industry is projected to generate up to $25 billion in annual revenues by 2015, nearly three times the estimated $9 billion this year, according to the Business Processing Association of the Philippines.

Veolia Water set to outsource IT to TCS

December 13th, 2010

Veolia Water has confirmed that Indian outsourcing provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will manage and provide IT services to the firm.

The water company told Computing earlier this month that it had been reviewing its IT support services as part of an ongoing transformation programme, and it was speculated at the time that an outsourcing deal with TCS was under consideration. The company has now substantiated those claims in a statement revealing the Indian firm has been appointed.

“Following a company-wide review of our IT provision, we will appoint an IT business partner to deliver the knowledge and expertise we require to meet our future IT needs,” said Buddy Willard, chief information officer at Veolia Water.

“We can confirm that we are currently talking to our preferred partner Tata Consultancy Services Limited with the intention of developing a partnering relationship.”
