Outsourcing helps banks save money and update technology

December 25th, 2010

When Bank of Hawaii recently upgraded its online bill-paying service, customers made suggestions about how to improve the interface.

But, because the bank outsources its online services, it’s an ongoing process to incorporate those changes.

Most banks, both in Hawaii and on the Mainland, have been outsourcing back-office functions such as credit card processing for years, according to Gary Fujitani, executive director and executive vice president of the Hawaii Bankers Association.

Outsourcing has become even more prevalent with online banking and bill-pay services because it allows financial institutions to stay competitive and innovative as technology changes.

HP Lands $400 Million Global Outsourcing Services Pact with BP

December 25th, 2010

Hewlett-Packard Co. said that its U.K. Enterprise Services unit has inked a five-year $400 million global outsourcing services agreement with BP International Ltd., the gas and petroleum exploration giant.

The deal marks HP’s second large outsourcing services pact this week and third this month. Earlier this week, HP landed a $1.4 billion, five-year outsourcing services contract with E.ON IT GmbH, the IT and telecommunications unit of the German utility giant. Two weeks ago, the vendor secured an $80 million, seven-year contract with TOPS Friendly Markets LLC, a 132-store supermarket chain with outlets in New York and Pennsylvania, for applications and infrastructure technology services.

HP currently provides data center services to BP’s U.K.-headquartered European data centers. The new arrangement will extend HP services to other BP data centers in Europe and the Americas under a single contract that includes monitoring, backup and recovery, site management and maintenance services, and database and middleware management.

The vendor will provide BP with onsite data center services and remotely from its delivery centers in India.

Officials said that the deal will allow BP to standardize and consolidate its hosting services and incorporate cloud computing into its solutions mix. With the agreement, BP gains access to HP’s enterprise and public cloud computing services, as well as cloud services from other suppliers.

“A consistent and standardized data center environment enables companies like BP to navigate the many challenges of global operations in the oil and gas industry,” said Mike Nefkens, HP Enterprise Services, EMEA, senior vice president and general manager.

Nefkens said that HP intends to help BP construct an Instant-On Enterprise, embedding technology at every layer of operations.

“HP’s flexible computing capabilities and service excellence can help companies like BP to build an Instant-On Enterprise, in which technology is embedded in everything it does, while achieving their strategic goals,” said Nefkens.

BP said that it plans to upgrade information management by matching IT to its business objectives. Working with HP on a global basis will help BP to drive technology innovation and service improvement, officials said.

“By establishing a standardized global operating model, BP will realize immediate cost reductions, improved consistency of service and be well positioned to utilize emerging technologies,” said Dana Deasy, BP group vice president and chief information officer.

Outsourcing services can fill the university funding void

December 25th, 2010

Universities can cope with significant funding cuts by taking advantage of outsourcing services, it has been suggested.

Policy Exchange claimed that by seeking external support from the private sector, overall higher education costs could be reduced by £2.7 billion.

As well as IT, functions such as accommodation, HR and student records could be outsourced to private companies, the thinktank said.

Report author Alex Massey claimed that too many higher education institutions are operating in an outdated way.

“They’ve failed to recognise the savings and service improvements that could be obtained through engagement with commercial partners and the use of shared services,” he claimed.

“With students facing higher levels of debt, it really is time for universities to start taking efficiency and value-for-money seriously.”

Mr Massey claimed that outsourcing and shared service arrangements would be “a very good way” to reduce costs and improve service quality.

A number of city and district councils, including Birmingham, Hertfordshire and Bournemouth have turned to outsourcers to reduce costs since the £81 billion public cuts were announced earlier this year.

Outsourcing ‘could be prevalent for business printing’ in 2011

December 25th, 2010

Business printing services providers could be set to make 2011 the year of outsourcing for their IT requirements, it has been claimed.

Gerry McLaughlin, of ITContractor.com, said the industry has seen many large to medium-sized firms embracing outsourcing in the last 12 months and this trend could be set to continue into the New Year as firms look to ensure they have individuals with the right skillsets working in their IT departments.

However, he commented: “Many companies who outsourced in the past are now ‘insourcing’ again as they didn’t get the cost benefits that they expected and lost control of the vital IT side of their businesses.”

Meanwhile, business printing services provider HP recently announced the signing of a new five-year outsourcing services agreement with BP International.

Towers Watson to Acquire Aliquant to Expand Health and Welfare Outsourcing Business

December 23rd, 2010

Towers Watson (NYSE, NASDAQ:TW), a leading global professional services company, today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Aliquant, a privately held, full-service health and welfare benefits administration outsourcing firm. This acquisition reinforces Towers Watson’s ongoing commitment to remain the benefits administration provider of choice for organizations seeking high-quality outsourcing services.

The completion of the transaction, expected before the end of the year, is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. This acquisition is expected to be slightly accretive to Towers Watson’s adjusted diluted earnings per share in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, but does not change the company’s financial expectations for the fiscal year.

“Bringing Aliquant into Towers Watson combines two great teams that share a commitment to delivering the best possible service to leading organizations,” said Pat Amendola, North America leader of Towers Watson’s Technology and Administration Solutions business. “This agreement strengthens Towers Watson’s position as a premier provider of health and welfare outsourcing, and provides greater economies of scale to help us maintain our service quality while supporting our longer-term growth goals.”

Aliquant was founded in 1985 in Milford, CT, to develop software for the administration of health and welfare benefit plans. Today, Aliquant has more than 200 employees. The company’s clients — which number more than 75 and range in size from 1,000 to 100,000 employees — span a variety of industries. In addition to core administration services, Aliquant’s offerings include employee customer service call centers, FSA and COBRA administration, direct billing and hardcopy and electronic total compensation statements. For the fiscal year ended September 30, 2010, Aliquant had revenues of approximately $32 million.

“Over the past decade, Aliquant has become a well-regarded provider of health and welfare benefits administration. However, after a careful analysis of the marketplace, we concluded that the combination with Towers Watson was the right step for our clients and our employees,” said Aliquant founder and CEO Faisal Saleh. “Towers Watson and Aliquant complement each other strategically, and I’m confident that our clients will continue to experience excellent service while gaining access to a broader set of solutions and a commitment to technological innovation.”

Amendola and Saleh said that the two companies share similar “clients first” cultures and complementary business strengths and added that Towers Watson plans to work closely with Aliquant clients to preserve continuity of client teams and service.

IT outsourcing ‘to continue in 2011′ – Data and Server Racks

December 23rd, 2010

The trend for outsourcing IT services is expected to continue into the New Year, experts predict.

According to ITContractor.com, IT outsourcing will continue to grow in 2011, with an increasing number of medium-sized businesses employing external workers.

Gerry McLaughlin, of ITContractor.com, said many companies will pursue outsourcing solutions next year although it will only be larger firms that will turn to contractors.

He added, however, that many companies who outsourced in the past are now considering “insourcing” because they did not fully get the benefits they expected and lost control of the vital IT side of their businesses.

Mr McLaughlin went on to predict that IT skills will continue to be in demand going forward.

“The skills that will be most in demand will be skills like C#, C++, Java and .Net. Banking and financial experience will be important as those organisations shake off the cobwebs,” he commented.

HP Enterprise Services UK Limited announced this week that it has signed a five-year outsourcing services agreement with BP International Limited valued in excess of $400 million (£258.4 million).
