Indian IT industry to hire 2.25 lakh in 2011: Deloitte

March 14th, 2011

The Indian IT industry will add over 2.25 lakh employees in 2011 and will clock revenues of USD 71.7 billion by the end of the year, consulting firm Deloitte has said.

Revenues from the information technology and business process outsourcing industry will reach USD 71.7 billion for 2011 and account for 5.8 per cent of the country’s GDP , the firm said in its Technology, Media and Telecommunications Predictions for 2011.

The total number of employees working in the IT/ITeS (IT enabled services) sector will grow to 22.3 lakh this year, which translates into the addition of 2.26 lakh personnel, it said, adding that an additional 80 lakh people will get employment indirectly from the sector.

The Deloitte prediction follows a spate of announcements by IT majors like Infosys and TCS, among others, of stepping up recruitment in the current season as the global economy is going into a recovery mode.

Deloitte expects a higher growth in revenues from European and Asian markets compared to the traditional North American market this year.

It also added that the under-penetrated SME (small and medium enterprises) space will emerge as a “significant opportunity” in 2011.

Of the total USD 71.7 billion, up to USD 60 billion will come from the core software and services vertical, while exports from this segment will grow up to 17 per cent to USD 47 billion, the report said.

New Research Reveals the 2011 Trends in the Dutch IT Outsourcing

March 14th, 2011

IT Sourcing Europe, a UK-based nearshore IT outsourcing (ITO) research and advisory company, has recently completed its Dutch ITO survey, conducted in the frames of the All-European ITO research 2011. The survey was conducted online in February 2011 and taken by the 469 Dutch companies of different sizes and industry sectors. Forty-five percent of the survey participants admitted outsourcing their software development (SD) and/or some element(s) of the IT function nearshore, offshore or within the Netherlands, while fifty-five percent developed their software / IT solutions within own house.

The major trends benchmarked in the course of the survey demonstrate that in 2011 the Dutch ITO landscape looks healthier and more mature compared to the 2010 indications.

Overall, more Dutch companies began to adopt the outsourced software development at the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011, according to the research. Currently, non-outsourcing companies outnumber those that outsource their SD/IT by only 3.6%, while in 2010 non-outsourcers outnumbered outsourcers by 26.8%.

Regarding the value of the outsourced projects, the following trends are observed in 2011 compared to 2010: the number of the Euro0-49K projects increased by almost 10%, the number of the €50-199K projects dropped by 4%, the number of the Euro200-499K projects dropped by 2% and the number of the Euro500+K projects dropped by 5%. The finding proves 2011 to be the year of smaller ITO contracts. It is partly explained by the increased demand for / more active use of the Cloudsourcing solutions by the Dutch ITO buyers – up 18.3% from 2010.

While in 2010 the vast majority of the outsourcing companies partnered with their service providers via the traditional Offshore/Nearshore Development Centers (O/NDC) or fixed price projects, in 2011 there are more Dutch companies that tend to run own dedicated / virtual teams located remotely to complete the projects (up 34% from 2010). This trend can be linked to another trend observed: in 2011 more Dutch companies from innovative lucrative niches such as mobile computing, casual games development, social media, 3D animation and augmented reality begin to adopt the outsourced application development (up 32% from 2010). Since most of these companies are innovative startups and/or venture capital funded companies, they strive to have as much managerial control of their projects as possible and predictable ITO agendas, which are hard to achieve when using DDC or Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) models.

Overall, in 2010 the vast majority of the Dutch ITO buyers were somewhat satisfied with their ITO partners and service providers, while in 2011 the majority of outsourcers are very satisfied with their partners – up 20.4% from last year. On the other hand, the percentage of ITO buyers who are very dissatisfied with their ITO providers increased by 5.1% in 2011, compared to 2010.

AOL to cut 700 jobs in India; but to outsource 300

March 14th, 2011

American Internet giant, AOL, is cutting 700 jobs in India, but is outsourcing 300, a top company official has said.

“As a company, there’s about 200 (job cuts) in the United States and about 700 in India, although about 300 of those are going to go an outsourcer.

So effectively, it’s about 400 to 600 (job cuts) between India and the US,” AOL CEO Tim Armstrong told a television channel in an interview.

The company currently has about 5,000 employees, which includes employees from the recently acquired Huffington Post.

“We’ve dynamically changed AOL over the last couple of years to really focus on content and restructure the organisation starting with Europe and the US,” he said.

“We’re restructuring part of the Asia operations. But the biggest thing we’re focused on is really having the most talented group of people we possibly can work at the company. We have a great set of employees,” he said.

“Right now, the Huffington Post comes in as an opportunity for us to continue to focus on editorial quality and journalism. In the advertising business, we made tremendous progress,” Armstrong said.

“I have just laid off dozens of the most talented journalists & product folks I know,” Jonathan Dube, general manager of AOL’s news and information group said n his Tweet.

“Need talent? Let me know!” he said. Armstrong said the AOL has just announced a new brand format for advertising which got industry standard.

“Then we are continuing to work on the communications area. We have a new e-mail format out and a lot of other products coming out in that area,” he said.

Indian IT employees safe in Japan

March 14th, 2011

After the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan on Friday, about 20 Indian employees of IT services and outsourcing major MindTree, based out of its office in Tokyo, were reported to be safe in their respective areas of residence.

“Although telephone lines and other means of communication were jammed, we could establish contact with our Japan head over e-mail,” said Sweta Mohanty, associate manager and media incharge, MindTree.

“We found that all our employees and their family members who live in Japan are safe,” she said.

Sources said the company had plans to send three more employees from India to Japan in a couple of weeks from now.

“But, after the quake and tsunami on Friday, the company might reconsider its decision to send them,” they said.

An employee, who was deputed on a project for Sony Corporation, Japan, last December, said it might take some time for things to settle down and for the shock and fear factor to recede.

It’s expected that it would take some time before transportation facilities and jammed communication channels are resumed, which should also help soothe nerves.
