77% of IT staff say outsourcers invent work for profit

May 17th, 2011

Manufacturers should proceed cautiously when outsourcing critical IT security and management operations, according to the results of a survey by Lieberman Software.

Undertaken at the recent Infosecurity Europe 2011 event, in London, and mirrored at RSA Conference 2011 in San Francisco, the study shows that the relationship between many outsourcing companies and their clients is at breaking point.

No fewer than 77% of IT professionals who work in organisations that use outsourcing say their outsourcers have made up work to earn extra money. Worryingly, the survey also reveals that 43% of IT professionals work in organisations that have outsourced a significant portion of their IT.

However, the real shock comes with 62% of respondents saying that, compared to their original plans, outsourcing agreements have cost them more than anticipated. Only 11% said they are paying less than they originally expected, while 27% reckon their outsourcing agreements have cost “significantly more than planned”.

Philip Lieberman, president and CEO of Lieberman Software, says the findings should not be surprising: “IT outsourcing has been an exercise in reducing expenses and passing along HR issues to others. The unfortunate by-product of this quest for lower costs and fewer headaches is a situation where corporate collective knowledge, as well as loyalty and intellectual talent, has been lost.”

He regrets the passing of the time when IT was seen as “the lever arm of the company” – a group that could use technology to make the organisation more competitive.

“Industry analysts and consultants in the area of business process management came up with the idea that every job could be fully described and outsourced to the lowest bidder… Given that the advice came from a ‘credible source’, executives were able to achieve remarkable reductions in cost – until business challenges began to appear that required flexibility, corporate knowledge, and dedication to the company.

“The experts never considered dedication and loyalty as elements in their ‘process reengineering’. It was deemed as not quantifiable… What I see today, and what this survey confirms, is that many organisations are growing frustrated with IT departments that consist largely of outsourced employees who come and go at the whim of outsiders.

“If organisations are going to outsource IT they must measure their outsourcers’ performance across the appropriate set of criteria – not only cost, but resiliency, transparency and data security,” concludes Lieberman.

Wipro Acquires SAIC’s Oil and Gas Business

May 16th, 2011

Wipro, Information Technology, Consulting and Outsourcing company, announced April 1, 2011 that it will be buying oil and gas business of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). SAIC’s Global Oil and Gas Information Technology practice provides Consulting, System Integration and Outsourcing Services to Global oil companies.

Wipro, a leading offshore provider in the energy industry, will strength its portfolio by adding almost 1450 new skilled professionals. Wipro has a strong practice in implementing SAP, asset management in downstream and enabling energy trading. The SAIC acquisition will help Wipro fill gaps in the Upstream business, specifically it’s digital oil field services. The acquisition will be beneficial in diversifying both companies’ customer base. Both of the providers already service BP and Shell, the two giants of the oil industry. Wipro will be able to take its business to other regions, expanding to European and North American territories.

Overall, the acquisition looks good on paper as it add people and technology to both companies’ portfolios. However, both companies have distinct cultures. What SAIC brings to the table is deep technical expertise in the oil and gas industry. The company has done application development and management for critical petro-technical applications. It will be important for Wipro to take advantage of this expertise and ensure that SAIC experts are retained. Since Wipro has added domain expertise on its own, there is a good chance that this will happen.

May 16th, 2011

Information Technology and Business Process Outsourcing (IT/BPO) industries are expected to be among the highest growth sector of the country’s economy with the 20 percent annual growth rate, in terms of revenue. Even though Sri Lanka is the new toddler on the block in the IT and BPO area, it has the ability to compete with high profile counterparts.
With the dawn of peace, IT/BPO sector shows signs of being one of the potential industries with the entry of more foreign projects. To enjoy further economic benefits, having more foreign projects would be a crucial element to generate more foreign income in the country.

Speaking to Daily News Business, Lanka BPO Academy Chief Executive Officer Yasas Vishuddhi Abeywickrama said, there is a potential in the financial accounting and engineering designs in those areas are rapidly growing as equivalent to global market demands. It is heartening to note that many overseas projects are coming to Sri Lanka in the related fields.

Commenting on the stumbling blocks that mitigate the growth in the BPO industry. Abeywickrama said it is vital to impel the capacity building to take the industry to the next level. Skills development of the employees has to be enhanced in a much larger scale to suit the changing global business requirements. In addition, the cost of doing business in Sri Lanka is little expensive compared to other countries. The physical infrastructure in key economic areas particularly in telecommunication industry has also to be upgraded aggressively to boost the IT/BPO industry furthermore.

English is the business language which is widely used in Sri Lanka. The government and private sectors reiterate the importance of having English fluent individuals in the IT/BPO and other corporate sectors to become globally competitive. It is high time to teach English in a practical way at the school level to generate more high productive human resources for the IT/BPO industry and other commercial areas.

Abeywickrama said the ICT infrastructure in rural areas has to be utilized in a better manner while increasing the awareness of people on the BPO industry. Employees in the BPO industry are blessed with many opportunities and are exposed to foreign expertise with more foreign projects that are coming to Sri Lanka.

No vertical limits: BPOs widen sectoral reach

May 16th, 2011

Large BPO firms are widening their vertical or sectoral expertise to cater to the changing demands of the outsourcing industry.

Historically BPOs have been horizontal focused. They offered services like customer interaction and support, finance and accounting, and human resources that are applied across different industry verticals. Industry body Nasscom estimates that horizontal services account for more than 70% of the Indian BPO industry.

But with clients now more open to outsourcing sector specific mid- to front-end functions that require deeper domain knowledge, BPOs are enhancing their expertise in such functions. These include areas like mortgage processing, core banking, supply chain and healthcare insurance. For clients, this helps to contain costs and focus on their core business.

Deepak Patel, group CEO of Aditya Birla Minacs, said that insurance clients are now outsourcing core processes in underwriting and banking clients want BPOs to analyze risks associated with loans and make decisions on loan disbursements.

Aditya Birla Minacs focuses on banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), manufacturing, and telecom, media and entertainment verticals.

The BPO vertical focus is similar to what IT companies are doing. T J Singh, research director at Gartner, however said that unlike IT companies, Indian BPOs have not appointed vertical heads or made major managerial changes. BPOs add vertical expertise by either making acquisitions or setting up bases in countries where a particular expertise exists. On May 2, BPO firm EXL Service Holdings acquired finance and accounting outsourcing service provider Outsource Partners International, deepening EXL’s expertise in this space.

Others like Tech Mahindra, TCS and Aegis are also scouting for acquisitions in different geographies. Some Eastern European countries are excellent for accounting, while the US is good for healthcare experts.

BPOs are also appointing domain specialists to improve their verticalized offerings. For instance, banking sector executives are hired to work on actuarial (risk assessment) roles at BPOs.

“When clients interact with us, they interact with people with specialized knowledge and work skills from the same industry,” said Keshav Murugesh, group CEO of WNS Global Services.

WNS has introduced a completely new strategic orientation, by verticalization of the company around six areas including travel, banking and finance, manufacturing and retail. “Our core area of investment now lies in sales and new verticals,” Murugesh said.

Sameer Dhanranjani, country head of Fidelity National Financial, said that competition from other low-cost geographies is making it necessary for Indian BPOs to offer higher end differentiated services. “Also, verticalization enables BPOs to win longer term sticky deals with better margins,” he added.

Gartner’s Singh however said that Indian BPOs needed to do much more to compete against MNC BPOs like IBM that have very specialized offerings. “Pure play BPOs have the offerings, but they struggle to market them; and IT companies with BPO arms are unsure about the extent of investment to be made in verticalized solutions,” he said.
