As a part of the deal Capgemini will acquire a software solution developed by Skvader to support its managed business services contracts.

The software is sold to other utilities and utility service providers through SaaS contracts to support 1 million smart meter deployments. This software will enhance the solutions that Capgemini currently deploys in support of Smart Energy Services contracts in Europe and North America

Skvader is one of the delivery partners of Landis+Gyr, a leading provider of integrated energy management solutions, in Landis+Gyr’s contract for the installation and management of 400,000 meters in Sweden at power and gas company E.ON.

This will now be a part of Capgemini’s Smart Energy Services business, further extending the company’s share of both the Swedish and European smart energy market.

Capgemini estimates that over €300m of smart energy service contracts will come to the Nordics over the next three years, underlining the strategic significance of this acquisition.

Even the large BPO firms are hit. During the April-June quarter of the financial year 2010-11, attrition rate in TCS BPO was around 20 per cent, and the same in Wipro was around 16 per cent respectively.

According to HR consulting firm Talentar Managing Director Abhishek Udayai, “The job market is opening up and this has become a worry for many BPO firms. BPO is the highest job provider in the IT industry and the attrition rate is also very high in this segment.”

However, headhunters feel that BPO sector which was considered as a stepping stone to an IT or corporate career is slowly transforming and the industry has gone up the value chain.

The industry has matured significantly and is one of the fastest growing sectors of India, employing 7,68,000 professionals which also pose a challenge of getting right talent. “The workforce is the backbone of the BPO industry and the attrition rates have becoming alarmingly high for the industry.

Most of the companies are promoting within to ensure that talent remains,” said Kelly Services India Managing Director Kamal Karanth. HR firms and companies feel that the high rate of attrition is due to a sudden spurt in the market after dormancy for more than four quarters.

As software companies started hiring engineers, employees in the BPO companies are changing their field to software development. This is also a reason for worry.

CBaySystems VP – HR Sanjay Shanmugaum believes that, “the average attrition rate in the BPO sector is higher than the normal IT industry average. The key challenge faced by employers is the need to retain talented employees.

Attrition is seen high among junior level people.” Many HR heads of the top IT and ITeS companies have come out with new methods to curb attrition. Companies are giving salary hikes and promotions to retain talent to address the problem. They are even signing non-poaching agreements— first time in the history of the Indian IT industry.

According to Patini Computers Senior Vice President and Global Head – BPO Sanjiv Kapur, “Salary hike is not only reason for employees leaving the organisation.

Corporates should provide ample growth opportunities and a well-defined career track for growth.”

Experts believe that the attrition rate will be stabilised after one or two quarters.

HCL Technologies, among the top five Indian IT firms, which reported strong growth in its enterprise applications for the first time since the recession began two years ago, pointed to the $50 billion industry having turned the corner.

“During the last two years, most of our growth, as well as the big contracts, used to come from our ‘run the business’ services such as infrastructure and application development… However, the last quarter finally come back to ‘change the business’ solutions such as enterprise applications, research and development etc.,” said Vineet Nayar, CEO of the $2.7 billion enterprise.

“It’s hard not to be excited by a $ revenue growth at 7.7% quarter on quarter (9.1% quarter on quarter in constant currency) – which has beaten peers Infosys, TCS and WiproYet, the results raise fresh questions on the company’s strategy, which is paying off handsomely on revenues, but poorly on Ebitda. We expect no change in our earnings estimates despite the revenue beat,” said Bhavtosh Vajpayee & Nimish Joshi of CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets in a note after the results.

Ebitda margins were down 110 basis points sequentially to 18.6%, driven by continued losses in the BPO business. The company’s software services segment was also impacted by higher sub-contractor costs.

“We are placing our current Outperform rating on the stock under review pending clarity on the Ebitda trajectory for the company,” Vajpayee & Joshi said.

Indeed, HCL’s 7.7% growth in dollar revenues growth over the fourth quarter of last fiscal was spearheaded by enterprise applications, which gets most of its revenues from deploying huge, company-wide software suites such as SAP and Oracle.

The unit had underperformed others such as outsourced infrastructure management during the recession as companies froze their IT expansion plans and moved to conserve cash by outsourcing the management of their existing infrastructure.

During the last quarter, ‘expansionary’ services such as enterprise applications and R&D grew by 12% and 11% each. In comparison, bread and butter services such as infrastructure 9% and application development grew by 6.7% each while the company’s revenues grew by 7.7%.

“We are seeing the return of budgets to the sort of projects that haven’t been around for some time,” said Steve Cardell, head of HCL’s London-based enterprise applications subsidiary HCL Axon, acquired in late 2008.

The new contracts include both large SAP and Oracle roll-outs by global giants as well as numerous small projects such as business intelligence or data-mining, product design and R&D.

Encouraged, the firm will now expand its India development presence by hiring 1,000 experienced SAP and Oracle professionals in India over the next six months.

HCL’s rolls swelled by a record 6,500 people in the last quarter, its highest net addition in the last two years.

Out of the 11,000 people it hired during the quarter, around 70% were experienced workers, Nayar said.

With the clients going back to expansionary mode, Nayar saw a ‘war for talent’ as everyone tries to ‘stock up’ on employees for the anticipated growth.

“People did not invest in talent and training in the last 24 months.. Suddenly, in anticipation of growth, there is a scamble for talent even though there is no real immediate scarcity of talent..,” he said.

HCL has shot off increment letters to most of its employees which is likely to squeeze its profits in the current quarter, officials said. “Some increments due in October have been advanced to July,” Nayar said, refusing to reveal the extent of salary increments. He, however, saw industry-standard increments considerably north of the “8-10%” suggested by reporters.

HCL posted a 4% quarter on quarter decline in net profit, was hit hard by the steep fall in the value of euro.

The currency has lost around 15% of its value in the last six months due to worries over soveriegn debt levels in Europe. As a result, the contribution of Europe, including non-Euro Britain, shrunk from 28.5% a year ago to 24.6% of the total revenues during last quarter, despite stable volumes.

Volume growth for HCL, at more than 9%, was higher than the top three. Wipro had posted a volume growth of around 5% while TCS and Infosys, the leaders in the industry, had reported volume growth of 7-8%. HCL, which posted net profits of $73.6 million during last quarter, was dragged down by the performance of its shrinking BPO business, which still accounts for around 10% of the total revenues. Nayar said it will take another four to six months for the BPO business to stop making losses.

“We are investing $4-5 million every quarter to create a new platform [for the BPO business,]” and till then, it would continue to post losses,” he said. The BPO business posted a loss of $6.5 million before taxes and finance charges, eating into the $120 million profits created by the IT services business.

HCL is in the middle of a strategic shift from “non-core” BPO services such as outbound marketing calls to services that can be bundled with its IT services such as infrastructure management.

“While the past decade saw the workforce largely from India, the next decade will see nearly 20 percent of the work force are non-Indians. The next decade will see Indian companies migrating to domain specific services from the current delivery centric activities,” Mittal said.

With Indian IT-BPO companies getting integrated with global markets they will focus on the international policies and processes that would impact their operations from the present focus of domestic policies.

Citing Nasscom’s eight best hiring practices, he urged the industry players to adopt the same.

According to Nasscom, some of the best practices are while hiring companies should insist on relieving letter, hire from the campus only in the eighth semester, check on non-compete agreements from customer contracts, employees to serve notice period, discourage frequent job hoppers.

To the query that many leading IT companies insist on bonds making the IT employees a “bonded labour” and do not issue relieving letters even after an employee serves the notice period, Mittal said: “Nasscom does not support such practices. Companies may be resorting to such practices to reduce the attrition.”

“Best practices will also help the employees. Hiring in the industry has touched the pre-2007 levels,” added R.Chandrasekaran, president and managing director, Cognizant Technology Solutions.

However, as an organization’s use of shared services centers matures, a blended sourcing model leveraging business process outsourcing is necessary to realize the full value of the SSC model, according to a whitepaper offered by WNS Global Services and Trintech. The whitepaper entitled, “Taking it to the Next Level: Shared Services Centers Move Up the Maturity Curve,” discusses how companies can increase the value of their shared services centers in an era of scarce resources and economic turmoil.

This whitepaper highlights the four levels of the shared services center maturity curve companies should follow to realize full value from the SSC model, including:

Level 1: Optimizing operations through centralizing functions, standardization, establishing tracking mechanisms and operating metrics

Level 2: Fundamentally changing the work by looking across processes to build scale and further optimizing operations through workflow and self service

Level 3: Leveraging a blended sourcing model, advanced communication mechanisms and business intelligence to advise customers on risk trends

Level 4: The SSC becomes a joint innovator collaborating with the business, third-party providers and domain experts to take the business to the next level

Levels 3 and 4 represent a tremendous opportunity for companies looking to mature their shared service centers beyond basic operational optimization. This whitepaper discusses an approach companies can follow to reach this level of maturity in their shared service centers leveraging strategic business process outsourcing.

‘We will sign an agreement with the state government in the presence of British Prime Minister David Cameron and Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa Wednesday here to set the 2,000-seat processing centre at Shimoga,’ Xchanging India chief financial officer Sri Krishna told IANS.

Cameron will be in Bangalore with a high-profile delegation on his maiden official visit to India after he assumed office in May to visit IT bellwether Infosys Technologies and defence behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) in the city.

The centre will be located on a six-acre land in the new special economic zone (SEZ) at Shimoga, the home town of Yeddyurappa and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s state unit president K.S. Eshwarappa.

‘We will be the first multinational to set up such a green technology based centre in a tier-three location to grow our presence in the Indian sub-continent,’ Krishna said, but did not disclose the proposed investment in the new facility.

The London-based BPO firm has been operating at Shimoga, about 270 km from this tech hub, from rented premises since 2008, employing about 300 youngsters from the region.

Xchanging founder and chief executive David Andrews will also be present on the occasion with his Indian subsidiary managing director Nimesh Soni.

As one of the leading business processors, the 750 million pound back office firm also operates from Bangalore, Chennai and Gurgaon in the National Capital Region.

‘We provide non-voice based back office services spanning procurement, accounting, human resources and technology across industry verticals, including banking, insurance, manufacturing, retail and real estate,’ Krishna said.

Combining functional expertise with domain knowledge, the company also offers industry-specific outcomes to its clients across 42 countries through an 8,000-strong workforce.

This was disclosed by Vineet Nayar, Chief Executive Officer, in an interview with this correspondent over telephone on Thursday.

Under this, the company would offer integrated platform along with people as a business package and charge the clients on a per transaction basis. As a step towards this, HCL Technologies, had acquired a leading U.K.-based BPO provider Liberata Financial Services (LFS) to provide comprehensive end-to-end administration and customer services for the life insurance and pension industry. The company’s insurance practice would be strengthened by LFS’ core capability to manage complex transactions. It had decided to invest $30 million in eight quarters in transforming the BPO business.

Mr. Nayar said the company was also planning to set up capability centres in Chennai, Bangalore, Noida and Hyderabad. These centres would act as a special force to create a global capability to compete with the skill sets in the U.S. and the U.K in the SAP and Oracle platforms. It proposed to recruit 1,000 engineering graduates with skill sets in SAP and Oracle platforms. They would be trained by capabilities consultants of HCL, Axon of the U.K.

On IT markets in Europe, he said there had been no significant growth in the continent. The two main reasons for the static growth were currency impact and macro economic environment. There had been a significant growth in the U.S. and Asia Pacific. HCL was confident that in the long run, Europe would be a big market, as there was large untapped potential compared to the U.S. and Asia Pacific. This would be an advantage for HCL over a period. Continental Europe had contributed 10-15 per cent to the overall revenue from Europe for HCL. Nordic, France and Germany were the major revenue contributors compared to other economies in Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain, where it was nil.

On the domestic front, he said the company was looking at end-to-end projects in the power and insurance sectors. On the government side, it was looking at select projects, he added. The turnover of HCL Technologies rose by 18 per cent plus during the year ended June 30, 2010, to Rs. 12,565 crore from Rs. 10,591 crore in the previous year. The performance would have been better but for the negative growth of 12.5 per cent in the BPO (business process outsourcing) segment. The IT services division (both software and infrastructure) grew by 22.4 per cent year-on-year.

Net income was marginally higher at Rs. 1,302.70 crore against Rs. 1,277.70 crore. Earnings before interest and tax were higher by 12 per cent at Rs. 2,071.80 crore against Rs. 1,857.30 crore.

The company had net headcount additions of 10,341 and the total stood at 64,557.

The UAE’s entry into the field is particularly—and pleasantly—surprising because some of its neighbours, such as India, Pakistan, Egypt and Sri Lanka, are among the world’s biggest providers of BPO services.

India, for example, commands nearly 70 per cent of the international BPO industry. Potentially, getting more into the BPO represents not only an enhance revenue stream for the UAE, it also plugs its “knowledge economy” sector into the global mainstream.

Typically, large corporations outsource back-office operations—such as record maintenance, or legal documentation—to third parties in order to save on in-house staff; when such outsourcing is assigned to companies in foreign countries, it’s called off-shore outsourcing.

Because many of the world’s largest corporations have outposts in the Gulf, and, in particular, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, back-office work generated in these satellites is outsourced to countries such as India, and even as far away as China, Mauritius and the Philippines. But now a number of canny entrepreneurs based in the UAE are recognising that they can tap into this income stream.

After all, the UAE has one of the highest literacy rates in the world, and, in addition to nationals, many techno-savvy expatriates are available to expand the BPO industry.

The industry is only likely to grow as more and more corporations—especially ones based in Western economies that have been severely affected by the global financial crisis of the last two years—trim their internal budgets.

“It’s far cheaper to outsource back office work to developing countries,” says Babulal Jain, a founding president of a three-year-old entity called the World BPO Forum, which is organising the New York gathering this week.

Now the Forum hopes to set up a chapter in the UAE, not the least because of the nascent BPO industry here. Are Indian BPO companies worried about the UAE’s entry into the BPO? Not the least, says Jain. That’s because the overall global industry is expanding that new players such as the UAE would be assets.

Moreover, because of the emphasis put on developing the knowledge economy by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and President of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, on encouraging entrepreneurship—especially in leading-edge industries—the development of the BPO sector would certainly receive strong governmental support.

And it is a special kind of revenue source, particularly because no new investment would be needed to expand existing call centers and back-office facilities.

So it isn’t as though this week’s global gathering in New York will create some sort of smashing breakthrough for the UAE’s BPO industry, which is still in its infancy. But the UAE now will certainly be considered a player to be reckoned with.

David Andrews, CEO of Xchanging, who is part of Cameron’s business delegation, signed the MoU with the state owned enterprise KEONICS managing director Harikumar Jha, to develop a special economic zone (SEZ) in Shimoga, in the presence of Yeddyurappa, on Wednesday, Jul 28.

This global business processor, will develop the new SEZ with a state-of-the-art processing centre on six acres of land.

It will thus be among the first multinational firms to set up a centre in a tier-3 location in the country.

The BPO will have an initial capacity of 1,000 people with an option to scale up to a 2,000-seat centre

“We have received tremendous cooperation from the state government. We are looking forward to expand our business in the state,” Andrews said.

Yeddyurappa said the state would extend full cooperation to the company in developing the SEZ.

The chief minister said, “after the recent Global Investors Meet in Bangalore, several major IT companies were looking to set up business in Karnataka and we have decided to focus on developing tier-2 cities in the state to attract IT investment.”

He hailed good practices being adopted by companies, some of which include insisting on relieving letters (from previous companies), campus hiring during the eighth semester, supporting reference checks and mandatory background checks.

The industry is adopting a set of practices that would promote ethical hiring and help the industry address short-term challenges of attrition and talent management, he said.

He said the coming decade would be witness to a ‘multi-cultural’ workforce with 15-20 per cent of foreign origin, and adoption of global policies and processes by firms.

On the impact of social networking sites, he said it would become “part and parcel” of any organisation.

“Earlier, there was email being sent by top officials. But now that has changed. Anyone can use (an) email. Similarly, organisations need to look at it (social networking sites) on a positive side,” he said.

On competition from China, Mittal said it should be viewed as an opportunity.

“From the customer’s point of view, China brings in right talent,” said Cognizant Managing Director R Chandrasekaran.

“We have to look at China as a cost-stability nation,” he said, adding that the software business to India would increase from 60 million to 225 million and “some part of it would come from China”.

Here is the easiest three elements that you should be outsourcing for anyone in charge of marketing for your business:

1. Your Web site Designs

Any time you do not have a site for your organization, you will need to get with the regimen. In the majority circumstances, users and future clients expect you to have a website even when they don’t attempt to use it. It could seem strange, however brand-new research demonstrates that most individuals believe that a company which has a site is without a doubt bigger and more healthy than a company lacking one.

You don’t have to be a artist to develop an efficacious internet site. Look into growing your business while an expert provider brands the look and feel of your website.

Website design and style has become the most prominent professions on the net these days. You can have a brand new webpage built or make a current web site reorganisation in just 2 or 3 weeks or even a few days. Just be sure your blog will be an extension to your corporate identity; you’ll invest money making it, so make sure it matches your needs.

2. Outsource Programming

The net is a blank canvas, web related technologies are contrasting styles, and internet programmers are the talented actors. Every single page you find via the web today had been crafted by a developer of some sort.

Whatever you have looked at on another internet site can be created on your web site with the right developer. Domain development can be quite a competitive service, and freelancing is the perfect way to take advantage of professional internet programming .

3. SEO & Search Engine Advertising

That old saying “build it and they will come”, will not apply here. Search engine position is significant for anybody having a on-line store; even if you ever do produce it, people will never visit as long as they simply cannot notice you. Search engine optimization (SEO SEM) companies helps your internet site to get better SERP rankings. The search engine needs adjust constantly so solutions will need to respond – unless you’re a website SEO pro, you’re unlikely to have the necessary skillset.

Search engine marketing (SEM) is also a specialty subject. Usually it takes days, months and years of experience to post successful ads, place ads on the ideal niche sites, set up reliable affiliate products, or maintain PPC systems so you get the most targeted traffic and most importantly, revenue.

Trained companies can do that for you plus they can easily keep track of different styles and traits within the SEM and Search engine marketing spheres.

For anyone who is aiming to outsource advertising and marketing, you should definitely get a professional vendor that can take on your preferences.

Choosing the right content provider has been proven to the difference between success and failure. Hiring someone else to do your work has its advantages and disadvantages. There are many factors that play into making sure you have the right outsourcing firm for the project that you have. Not all are created equal. If you really want to succeed in the online world you must outsource some if not all of the work.

Paying someone else to accomplish some tasks are necessary for any business. That is why they hire employees. If you ask any accomplished internet marketer about outsourcing they will tell you that it has made their lives a bit easier. Even offline business owners outsource. They pay an accountant to do their books. This makes it a bit easier for them to run the business. This is what outsourcing is all about. It is mainly designating responsibility to others so you can run your business and make a profit. This can raise many questions as to how much you should pay for ther service.

The rates that some freelancers charge has been a topic of debate. Some say that the lower the better. Is this true? No! By going out and looking fo the lowest rate possible you might be opening up yourself for a huge amount of low quality work. This to can be deadly for your venture. This is why finding the right content provider can mean the difference between success and failure. Paying for what you get is very true when it comes to outsourcing. If you put less money into your outsourcing budget then your generally opening yourself up for failure

To bring your business out of the depths of the abyss you can work with some of the best writers in the USA today. There are methods that are currently being used by a select few that will put your blog or site directly on the front page of the major search engines. What this means is that while your searching for the lowest cost when it comest o outsourcing your competitors are making money by hiring the best of the best. You too can get to the top of the search listing by paying for what you want.

Since your reading this I am assuming that you are still looking to outsource. Now is the time to decide what to do. Who to pick! If you can make the move right now, you are not only positioning your blog for success but you are choosing profits over failure. Writers at Best Article Service are ready to get you put on the front page and move your blog into the top 5% of all blogs in your niche. These policies will now be based on the TCS BaNCS Insurance platform, a proprietary solution developed by TCS.

Diligenta embarked on this innovative transformation program with its first client, The Phoenix Group. The objective of this program was to improve operational efficiency with a view to enhance the customer experience for the policyholders.

Tony Kassimiotis, Managing Director, Operations, Phoenix Life said, “This is great news for our customers and will mean a better overall experience for them. For instance, two million of our policyholders will have, in due course, full access to self service and on-line request services through the Internet. They will also see a reduction in turnaround times when asking questions about their policies. We are really pleased to be working with both TCS and Diligenta on this transformation program and are looking forward to realizing further benefits as we progress.”

This is also a significant capability achievement that will benefit Diligenta’s future clients. The utility model will ensure that when Diligenta writes new contracts, it can consolidate the policy portfolio of new customers onto the same TCS BaNCS Insurance platform. This will benefit both Diligenta and its clients through economies of scale with infrastructure and on-going operations and maintenance. A major benefit to clients will be Diligenta’s ability to react quickly and effectively to any major regulatory change. An additional service will allow customers to receive instant quotes for maturities, surrenders and transfers over the phone.

Phiroz Vandrevala,Chairman, Diligenta and Executive Director, TCS said,“The success of this transformation program reinforces Diligenta’s strong position in the UK life and pensions outsourcing market and signifies a step change for the industry, in response to both regulatory reform and changing customer needs. We are well-placed to support customers’ needs in this rapidly-evolving environment, and this project once again demonstrates our ability to deliver real business benefits through our specialized industry expertise.”

Suresh Menon, Chief Executive Officer, Diligenta said, “Diligenta’s state of the art platform and extensive expertise in the UK life and pensions industry has ideally positioned us to partner with the Phoenix Group to deliver this significant milestone. The transformation process has been successful and we look forward to future opportunities to deliver similar state of the art projects within the insurance sector.”

Charles Juniper, Insurance Sector Analyst at BPO specialists, NelsonHall said, “This is a significant achievement on the part of Diligenta. Migration to the BaNCS platform will allow Diligenta to accelerate the pace of cost savings through high levels of automation, reduced product templates, cleansed policyholder data and customer portals. The slowdown in sales of life insurance products in the mature UK and US markets is forcing the Boards of insurers to seriously assess the use of BPO models, particularly for closed blocks. Clients are looking for BPO providers with strong capabilities across a number of dimensions including operational improvement, direct control of platform development, first-rate migration and consolidation skills, a highly integrated multi-shore delivery model and a proven track record. With this milestone, Diligenta will be in a strong position to capture new life insurance BPO business going forward.”
