How SSDs Solved One Company’s IT Performance Problems

November 29th, 2011

Company mergers and acquisitions often strain storage, server, and IT resources, potentially endangering access to applications that are the company’s lifeblood. Such was the case with AlphaStaff, a human resources (HR) outsourcing company, and of Jack Rahner, VP of technology for the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.-based company.

When AlphaStaff acquired another Florida-based HR staffing company in 2009, it grew its business from handling HR services for 6,000 people to more than 80,000 staffers. The extra business completely overwhelmed its LeftHand storage area network and its enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Plus, in the five years since they had bought the LeftHand system, the company’s data had grown from a manageable 1 TB to over 60 TB of storage.

Rahner knew he had a problem. Addressing capacity and then performance were his major concerns. Employees were complaining that they could not access the ERP and business intelligence applications without delays. These two applications were the lifeblood of AlphaStaff’s business, allowing them to process payroll and manage an employee’s benefits. In addition, Rahner and his team had started virtualizing the servers within AlphaStaff using VMware and in doing so, added an additional tax on the storage system.

“Everything was getting virtualized and we were getting the most out of our hardware,” says Rahner. “I started to realize, though, that the weakest link was capacity. And, now that has taken a backseat to disk speed. We started saturating the network and were having bandwidth issues.”

So Rahner started looking for a storage system to replace the LeftHand system he had. He looked at EMC and NetApp and finally chose Compellent, which was 60% faster than his previous storage area network (SAN). Then he connected his legacy ERP and business intelligence applications to the Compellent Storage Center SAN. It came equipped with three tiers of storage: solid state drives (SSDs), 15,000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives, and 10,000 RPM SAS drives.

“We are moving our ERP system and business intelligence system over to solid state drives for one reason: latency,” said Rahner. “When you are dealing with very high transactions or applications that are very database-intensive and require lots of serving of disk, solid state drives make a major difference.”

As a result of the SSDs, “we had our latency go from 10 milliseconds a transaction at 10,000 [I/O operations per second] to one millisecond overnight,” said Rahner.
Through testing of the ERP system with the Compellent Storage Center SAN, Rahner determined that there was an 80% performance improvement for the ERP system.
Rahner’s use of SSDs in his Compellent Storage Center SAN also garnered other business benefits.

“Because everything is virtualized and running on VMware, we were seeing performance from [our business intelligence application] that was less than optimal. Our customers were waiting 10 seconds or more to get information they needed. Going to SSDs made a world of difference.”

Service delivery a winner for IT company

September 6th, 2011

IT company Lexel Systems Limited has won an award for outstanding customer service at the Westpac Auckland North Business Awards 2011.

The Albany-based company, New Zealand’s largest privately owned provider of ICT services and solutions to business, government and education customers, won the Mitre10 Excellence in Service Delivery Award impressing judges with its service integration throughout the business.

Judges highlighted Lexel’s impressive growth in an industry that has shrunk significantly in the last three years and attributed this success to its excellent customer service and techniques to measure performance.

“It is very rare to see service measured this accurately, this often and this comprehensively and then have it integrated right throughout the business,” says Convenor of Judges, Matthew Bellingham.

Lexel specialises in solution consulting, infrastructure design, implementation, project management, business analysis, outsourcing, support services and procurement. These services can be used individually or bundled together to form turnkey solutions for projects.

Lexel System’s CEO, Noel Simpson, says that the company focuses on maximising the business performance of customers through industry leading expertise and world class solutions.

“Creating a culture of excellence at Lexel is a key part of our business strategy. At a tactical level, it has been critical that we report and reward individual staff in delivering on just that. We have developed and refined key systems and processes across the entire business that rewards exceptional delivery. Our Project Services VBRS? automated scorecard system is one the latest outcomes of that strategy,” says Mr Simpson.

Ngaio Merrick, Manager Business Development – North for Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development says that service is the ultimate business function to get right.

“Service delivery is crucial to all businesses; winning client loyalty is a critical ingredient for retaining clients and growing profitability. Congratulations to Lexel Systems Limited who clearly understand this philosophy,” says Ms Merrick.

The annual Westpac Auckland North Business Awards celebrates excellence in the local business community and honours successful companies across 12 awards categories.

IT Outsourcing services company, oneneck ranks no. 3667 on the 2010 inc. 5000 list with three-year sales growth of 44 percent

September 13th, 2010

IT outsourcing services company, OneNeck, has received rank No. 3667 on Inc. magazine’s fourth annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. Music website Pandora, convenience store chain 7-Eleven, Brooklyn Brewery, and Radio Flyer, maker of the iconic children’s red wagon, are among the prominent brands featured on this year’s list.

“The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. president Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.” OneNeck ranked No. 50 within Inc.’s Top Companies in the Phoenix metro area and is the only IT outsourcing services company on the list. The ranking in Inc. is based on OneNeck’s 44 percent three year growth rate providing comprehensive, flexible hosting and application management services.

Chuck Vermillion, OneNeck CEO, states, “We appreciate this prestigious honor. Our steady growth since inception, and through the economic downturn, continues to prove how fundamental hosting and managed services is for companies to remain competitive and efficient.”

Methodology:

The 2010 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2006 to 2009. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by June 30, 2006. Additionally, they had to be based in the United States, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2009. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2006 is $80,000; the minimum for 2009 is $2 million. As always, Inc. reserves the right to decline applicants for subjective reasons. The top 10 percent of companies on the list constitute the Inc. 500, now in its 29th year.

ISRO and the private sector In reliable company

July 18th, 2010

The relationship between ISRO and the private sector goes back a long way. Private firms have been supplying satellite components and ground equipment to ISRO since the initial stages of its developing satellite launch vehicle in the early 1970s.

Firms such as Larsen & Toubro and Godrej have been associated with the space agency for a number of years. “Our involvement with ISRO started in the 70s. At that time Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was overlooking the operations himself,” says MV Kotwal, senior vice president (heavy engineering) at L&T. The company has worked on all the generations of satellite launch vehicles—SLV, ASLV, PSLV and GSLV. Today, L&T makes rocket casings, has a facility to manufacture advanced composites, makes honeycomb deck panels and is installing a special radar system at Sriharikota which has a 4,000-km tracking range.

Private players value their experience in dealing with a professional group like ISRO. According to most firms, although ISRO is a government body, it never followed a sarkari approach in their interface with the private sector. “When their programmes started to mature in the mid-80s, they wanted to work with the private sector,” recalls SM Vaidya, vice president and business head, Godrej precision systems at Godrej & Boyce who has worked with the company for over 20 years and was there when the company first started work for ISRO in 1985. Godrej began with components for satellites and then graduated to the subsystem level. Now they make critical liquid propulsion engines for launch vehicles as well as parts of the engines fitted directly to the satellite.

ISRO’s model is unique. Unlike others, they reach out and find companies with specialised capabilities and then commission work to them instead of the companies approaching them for orders. “Stringent measures are used to ensure high level of quality that is the benchmark of space projects worldwide,” says ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan. The contracts too are different from regular government handouts. Mr Vaidya says ISRO will approach other suppliers only when they are unable to supply a particular component. “Till then we are the primary supplier,” he says.

In recent times, ISRO’s outsourcing of work has increased. “There has been a several fold growth in outsourcing. The value of outsourcing too has increased and more critical work is being given out,” says PS Veeraraghavan, director of Vikram Sarabahi Space Centre (VSSC), who himself is a rocket technologist. The R&D work happens in-house at ISRO where they define processes and then pass it on to the industry. It is the organisations policy to use the maximum infrastructure available in the country, says PP Sinha, deputy director at VSSC. In all, about 200-300 private companies supply products and services to ISRO. There are a few small companies who work exclusively for ISRO. “The additional work they are now getting is because they have worked with ISRO and follow stringent quality,” says Mr Sinha.

With private companies maturing, they are getting more critical work from ISRO. Take for example Astra Microwave which makes critical hardware components that were outsourced by ISRO for the first time. “We created a fresh facility, trained people and got a quality check done by ISRO before getting the contract,” says Astra MD, B Malla Reddy. The Rs 110-crore company has been working with ISRO since 2002 and today about 20% of its business comes from the organisation. Aerospace firms such as Taneja Aerospace and Aviation also work closely with ISRO.
