The Public and Commercial Services union has called off today’s scheduled strike action after settling pay differences with government IT outsourcing supplier Fujitsu, although parallel action by Unite members is still set to go ahead.

The PCS action would have affected a range of high-profile Fujitsu public sector clients including Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and the Home Office.

Fujitsu today announced that it has received a contract from Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation to provide Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services for the company’s sales management activities which accurately monitor information regarding the actual delivery of pharmaceuticals to pharmacies and hospitals through the management of shipment data records, as well as related master files, starting July 2010.

Utilizing roughly 30 years of experience in business activities in the pharmaceutical industry and systems operations as a base, Fujitsu will provide consistent support, ranging from Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma’s sales management activities – the foundation of its sales strategy – to systems operations and maintenance overall. Fujitsu will also contribute to the expansion of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma’s business.

Paving the way within the industry in 2000, Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma worked in collaboration with Fujitsu to overhaul the sales management system that manages data relating to sales of pharmaceuticals. Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma uses this system to pursue on-target marketing related to the sales and distribution of products in the pharmaceutical industry, in addition to promoting efficient sales activities. However in utilizing the system, the burden associated with sales management operations, which handle errors in shipping data records and maintain master files, became very high. As specialized skills and know-how were required to manage sales management activities, it became challenging for employees over the mid- to long-term to train their successors, thereby making it urgent for Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma to revise its operations.

In order to address these challenges, Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma analyzed and organized these activities, and by entrusting their full operations, including the sales management activities, to Fujitsu, which currently operates and maintains the sales management system, Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma is striving to cut costs and ensure the proper transfer of sales management skills to future generations of employees.

In July, Fujitsu established a sales management services center at Fujitsu Kansai Systems Limited that is operated by dedicated personnel equipped with necessary business process skills, and started operations for Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma’s sales management activities. At the sales management services center, records for pharmaceutical shipment data, which is managed by Fujitsu’s sales management solution, is compared with related master files and past data to determine consistency. By correcting errors while at the same time updating the corrections into the master files, the system can automate the burdensome tasks associated with error checking. In addition, both the enhancement of work efficiency and precision, as well as the accumulation of skills and expertise is realized by employing ICT functions that, automatically or in real time, enable version management of master files and reflect code revisions associated with organizational changes in authorized distributors.

With the first “real” Zero Client, Fujitsu presents one of the tradeshow highlights in hall 4 – tomorrow’s end-user device. The Zero Client is a frontend solution with all the advantages of a Thin Client – and even more. Designed as an intelligent display and available in 19 and 22 inches, the Zero Client comes with a single cable for power supply and LAN. It needs no operating system no processor, no applications, and no local data backup. The Zero Client merely establishes the connection to the virtual machine so there is no need for workplace management. This makes the “total cost of ownership” significantly lower than for the Thin Client.

Fujitsu also presents the latest additions to its notebook portfolio at CeBIT in hall 4. The new LIFEBOOK S710, for example, is equipped with Intel’s latest processor technology and offers excellent performance. At only 2.15 kilograms, it is one of the lightest modular 14-inch notebooks. The model offers integrated 3G/UMTS, WLAN and Bluetooth functionality. With a battery life of up to ten hours, it will last an entire working day without recharging. Fujitsu’s newest Tablet PC based upon the latest Intel platform, the LIFEBOOK T900, really stands out with its high processing power, multidirectional LED displays, and flexible electronic pen or multitouch operation.

Both LIFEBOOKS are equipped with Fujitsu’s Advanced Theft Protection, a modular security solution, which is also shown in hall 4. It especially caters to mobile users’ needs and offers maximum security for hardware and data; users can lock their notebooks in case of theft, erase sensitive data or locate the notebook and retrieve the notebook.

Hall 9: End-to-end solutions for the public sector

Fujitsu has announced that Railcorp has signed on for a two-year extension to a three-year IT outsourcing deal inked in 2006.

The New South Wales Government transport operator had originally signed Fujitsu to manage its data centre operations, desktop support and service desk in mid-2006 after a competitive tender process.

Included in that contract was an option to extend the deal a further two years, which was signed December 23.

Railcorp has suffered from a string of corruption allegations in the recent past – which has had some notable impact on its IT operations.

Railcorp chief information officer Vicki Coleman – who had months earlier been named by MIS magazine as “public sector CIO of the year” – was dismissed and escorted from the company’s head office in mid-2009 whilst the company was mid-way through an IT transformation.

Six months on, Railcorp is still operating with group finance and corporate services general manager Gary Pederson standing in as acting CIO.

Masami Yamamoto, currently a senior vice president, will take the helm of the firm starting in April, Fujitsu said on Friday.

Analysts have said Fujitsu needs to cut costs further if it is keep pace with heavyweights IBM (IBM.N), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ.N) and Dell (DELL.O). Fujitsu, despite efforts to expand abroad in IT outsourcing services, remains tied to a sluggish market in Japan.

“I want to make Fujitsu a truly global IT firm,” he told reporters at a news conference, at which he steered clear of details, saying that he had more studying to do first.

Chairman Michiyoshi Mazuka has been running Fujitsu ever since former President Kuniaki Nozoe abruptly stepped down in September, citing illness.

Mazuka’s provisional status weakened his ability to cut money-losing operations or pursue mergers to boost sales in IT services, company officials and investment bankers said.

The delay may be costly in the rapidly transforming IT services sector, where hardware, software, and services firms are coming together to become more competitive, such as Oracle Corp’s (ORCL.O) planned acquisition of Sun Microsystems Inc (JAVA.O) and HP’s deal for network equipment maker 3Com Inc (COMS.O).

Yamamoto, 56, began his career at Fujitsu designing a Japanese word processing system and working to expand the company’s PC operations overseas. In his current position he is in charge of Fujitsu’s server business.

“Fujitsu has been relatively speedy in restructuring, but some still remains,” he said. He declined to comment on which operations required restructuring, but said he wanted to keep the company’s shrinking chip operations for now.

Fujitsu has been scaling back its chip business, outsourcing development to TSMC (2330.TW). Yamamoto said said it was more important to bring the unit back to profitability before looking for potential partners or buyers.

Shares of Fujitsu ended down 2.2 percent at 578 yen, underperforming a 1.5 percent fall in Tokyo’s index of electrical machinery stocks .IELEC.T.

International debate regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has been intensifying prior to the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15). At the most recent Group of Eight Summit, world leaders agreed on a shared international goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and to achieve this goal it is estimated that emissions must be capped by 2020 at the latest. The rapid global adoption of energy-saving products and services and the introduction of other advanced environmental technologies in both developed and developing nations are seen as essential to meeting these goals. As a global IT company, Fujitsu believes it has an important role to play in reducing the environmental footprint of its energy-efficient IT equipment and datacenters as well as in introducing IT solutions throughout industry and society as a whole to reduce the burden of human activities on the environment.

At Fujitsu, environmental sustainability is a long-term commitment dating back to 1993 when we established our first environmental program. Our mission is to create a prosperous, low-carbon future. Our vision is to achieve this through IT innovations that reduce society’s environmental footprint and the impact of IT itself through the Green Policy Innovation program.

We are continually innovating with green IT services that help organizations reduce their carbon footprint through more sustainable practices and technology. Our power-saving, recyclable products are designed to lessen the environmental impact of IT on the planet. Our manufacturing plants, data centers and offices are being designed for low emissions, drawing on renewable energy and using natural landscaped surroundings. We complement these activities with the conservation of vast land tracts in Southeast Asia, carbon reduction programs and world-leading green governance. In 2006, Fujitsu completed global integration of its environmental management system based on ISO14001.
