More Gujarat IT companies seek global visibility by participating in CeBIT

February 8th, 2012

More technology companies from Gujarat are now seeking global visibility by increasing participation in international exhibitions.

Of the 23 Indian companies participating in CeBIT (Centrum fur Buroautomation, Informationstechnologie und Telekommunikation i.e. Centre for Office Automation, Information Technology and Telecommunication) to be organised in Germany, eight are from Gujarat.

Local players believe ecosystem for IT industry is coming up in the state and that is encouraging the companies to directly hunt globally for partners and clients.

“This is a good score,” said deputy director of Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), which subsidises the expenses of the companies.

Considered as the barometer in state of the art information technology CeBIT will be held during March 6-10 at Hanover. Ahmedabad-based OpenXcell Technolabs, Cygnet Infotech, Radix Web, Elsner Technologies, SP Technolab, Matrix Comsec (Vadodara) are amongst the list of IT companies expanding their horizon in international market by exhibiting their capabilities in mobile application, game development, web application development, internet marketing, telecom and security solutions.

OpenXcell MD Jayneel Patel believes that CeBIT is an opportunity for smaller companies to get in direct touch with present and potential clients. “Unlike US, companies in Europe like to know their business partners very well before entering into contract. CeBIT is a good place to network with them,” he said.

Over 3,00,000 visitors and 4,200 companies from over 70 countries are likely to participate in CeBIT. Gujarat has over 1,000 small and medium IT companies, mainly relying on outsourcing and scouting for orders using internet. At CeBIT they will showcase their strengths to the visitors in a direct interaction. “Many of the companies in Gujarat are in business for over a decade and have experience and confidence to participate in global events to realise their global dreams,” Minesh Patel, MD of SP Technolabs.

Vadodara-based Matrix Comsec, producer of hardware and software for telecommunications and security solutions is participating in CeBIT for the ninth time. Company officials say the exposure has enabled them to gain business. “Earlier only one or two companies participated in CeBIT. The number of companies is growing steadily,” the Sajeev Nair, head of products (telecom) at Matrix told ET.

Jaimin Shah, former president of Gujarat Electronics and Software Industries Association (GESIA) feels that although the participation is on rise, it is much less compared to the potential Gujarat has for IT industry. “Ecosystem of IT industry is slowly getting build in Gujarat. We have the best infrastructure in terms of availability of power and affordability of real estate. Now talent is also available. More companies should participate in such shows,” he said.

Infosys eyes Gujarat for setting up new campus

July 19th, 2011

After auto makers, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Ford, IT major Infosys Limited is vying for land in Gujarat. N R Narayana Murthy, chairman and chief mentor of the company, will meet Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to discuss setting up of a campus in the state.

Speaking on the sidelines of the first convocation of Ahmedabad University (AU), Murthy said: “We are waiting for the Gujarat government to give us land. It is now the state’s decision to do that. I am also meeting the CM tomorrow where we will talk about it.” Murthy presided over the convocation of the first MBA batch comprising 110 students and eight BBA (Honours) graduates.

Talking about apprehensions of a slowdown in the outsourcing industry, Murthy said: “As long as the concept of value-for-money prevails, the outsourcing industry will keep going.”
Addressing the convocation Murthy said: “While India’s economic growth rate is the second highest in the world; its stock markets are on fire, FDI in the country is galloping, achievements in the field & technology are also remarkable.”

“There is also a different picture of India. People at large are not benefiting from the phenomenal progress the country has made. It has not got freedom from hunger, illiteracy and diseases. Despite having 1/6th of the total population in the world, the country does not figure in the list of top 100, when it comes to the human development index. In such a backdrop, you are a few of the blessed ones, (those) who can transform India and facilitate inclusive and equitable growth prosperity.”

“As we want to improve on the human development front, we should do it with due commitment and proactivism rather than just blaming the destiny or the system. I have full confidence in the power of youth,” Murthy added.

IT firms in Gujarat eye new export markets

September 28th, 2010

While the US may continue to be a focus market for the IT industry in Gujarat, the firms are nevertheless widening their export destinations to new territories.

Countries like Japan, Denmark, Sweden and South Africa have caught the fancy of IT companies in Gujarat in the recent times. Apart from offering deals in euros, pounds and Australian dollars, these territories are also helping ease the pressure of dwindling orders from the western market.

“The US will continue to be a focus market for IT companies in Gujarat. Moreover, currency fluctuations have relatively stabilised. But the US and many European markets have been under economic pressures. Some of the new markets are emerging who are looking at outsourcing for the first time. This is helping, in a way, to reduce our dependence on the US market,” says Rajan Vasa, chairman and managing director of Contech BPO Services Private Limited.
According to Jaimin Shah, the newly elected president of Gujarat Electronics & Software Industries Association (Gesia) and founder director of Dev Information Technology Pvt. Ltd., countries like Japan, Australia, Denmark and South Africa are some new markets that Gesia member firms are exploring.

“These new territories deal in euros or pound where there is less currency fluctuation. Moreover, too much dependence on the US market can cost dearly since the market has been under pressure,” says Shah.

However, the shift in market share to Indian companies in these markets is around five per cent. “But even a five per cent change in market share is worth billions of dollars,” argues Vasa.

In the case of Vasa’s Contech BPO, a 100 per cent export oriented unit (EOU) which catered completely to the US market for last two years, the share has come down to 55 per cent to the US and 45 per cent to 12 other countries including Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium and Australia. “Similarly, while the US used to contribute about 65 per cent to IT exports in Gujarat, it may have come down to 55-60 per cent, but even that is significant,” Vasa adds.

The other factor that is working in favour of the new markets is the growth. “Orders have been pretty much stable or even dwindling from the US as of now, though there is still lot of scope for India to grab quality orders from the country,” says Pranit Banthia, CEO, Hi-Tech Outsourcing.

Rather, according to Vasa, the new growth is coming from other countries. “It is also because some of them have just begun outsourcing so that they can focus on their core competencies,” he adds.

Gloom a boom for Guj IT exports

January 19th, 2010

Information technology in Gujarat was always seen as a marginalised industry, thanks to the absence of large companies. But when major IT hubs of the country were reeling under a slowdown in the West in 2009, Gujarat’s disadvantage turned into an edge. IT exports from the state have grown by an impressive 72% year-on-year in 2008-09.

Data available with Software Technology Park of India (STPI), a nodal agency set up by the Central government to promote software exports, indicates that while exports from Gujarat have consistently grown over the past three years by over 20 per cent, during recession-hit 2008-09, it skyrocketed from Rs 740 crore in 2007-2008 to Rs 1,270 crore in 2008-9, a jump of over 70 per cent.

“The meltdown helped Gujarat-based small players as many US companies chose to outsource work to reduce costs. These companies preferred smaller companies over biggies due to competitive rates offered by them. Most IT firms in Gujarat are SMEs,” said Ravi Saxena, principal secretary, science & technology. Exports have already crossed Rs 1,000 crore in the first three quarters of the current fiscal, says Ajay Sharma, director, STPI (Gujarat).

Large companies like TCS expanded their footprint in the state, which further augmented outsourcing business, said Nirav Shah, president of Gujarat Electronics & Software Industry Association.

And, it were not just firms in the space of Business Process Outsourcing, Knowledge Process Outsourcing and call centres that gained. “Gujarat companies are building good reputation in the field of Engineering Design Software (EDS),” said Chirag Mehta, managing director of a software company. A chunk of EDS business came from Australia, USA and UK companies.
Software export from Gujarat was mere Rs. 4.75 crore in 1996 and until 2000 exports remained below Rs 10 crore. “Software exports crossed Rs 450 crore in 2004-05 due to improved infrastructure,” said Sharma.
