Indian IT supplier’s responses to question over hacking scandal

September 2nd, 2011

When the phone hacking scandal was all over the news, just before the shock news that News of the World had been closed, there was a lot of talk of emails being delated.

I must admit the whole thing was so shocking I hardly even though of the outsourcing angle.
Recently however a couple of people have asked me what happened in regards to the emails and the Indian IT supplier who provides IT services to News International.

News International’s supplier HCL was asked questions by the Home Office select committee and has been helping the Metropolitan police with its investigations since May 11th this year.

HCL Technologies said in a statement: “HCL continues to co-operate with the Metropolitan Police and the Home Affairs Select Committee in their investigations and has responded to all requests for information and clarification received to date.”

Hacking is getting increasingly sophisticated, says Norton

September 23rd, 2010

Hackers have moved on from simple scams to sophisticated espionage campaigns, it has been claimed.

According to IT security software provider Norton, some of the world’s largest corporations and government entities are now targets.

Con Mallon, security expert at Norton, said that in order to protect their IT systems, businesses must ensure that all employees are knowledgeable of the risks that surround them online.

He said: “Cybercriminals have increasingly turned their attention towards enterprises due to the potential for monetary gain from compromised corporate information.”

“Attackers have been leveraging the abundance of personal information, openly available on social networking sites, to synthesise socially engineered attacks on key individuals within targeted companies.”

The comments may encourage more companies to seek external PC support services through an IT outsourcing provider.

But all companies, irrespective of their IT setup, have been urged to take as many defensive precautions as possible.

“Ensuring all passwords are strong and difficult to break, avoiding the sharing of key information and clicking on unknown links, are key principles that must be engrained into employees,

Google hacking attack highlights need for security, says expert

January 20th, 2010

The recent hacking attempt on Google and other major companies shows the need for effective security solutions, IT outsourcing users have been told.

A post on the search engine’s official blog explained that the firm was the target of a “highly sophisticated” attack its corporate infrastructure, with 20 other companies caught up in the attempt.

The organisation also revealed that several of its Gmail accounts were the target of a phishing scam which saw hackers try to obtain the personal details of users.

Commenting on the news, Amichai Shulman, chief technology officer at IT solutions provider Imperva, said that the attack shows that companies are always at risk of security breaches.

“People are still falling for the simplest tricks in the book. Send them an email with the right content in the ‘to’ field and a compelling text and they’ll do anything – including disclosing their password and installing malware,” he explained.

The expert also said that firms can protect themselves from security breaches by employing an IT outsourcing provider to track down phishing campaigns and supply security solutions to defeat them.
