Cloud making its mark on London IT outsourcing

January 26th, 2011

Businesses across the UK are expected to embrace cloud computing in 2011, as they trade the “cost and pain” of traditional infrastructure for the “choice and flexibility” of IT outsourcing and the cloud.

Rob Lovell, chief executive officer at ThinkGrid, said: “Companies are asking themselves why they should continue with the status quo, making upfront capital expenditure investments and carrying all the risks associated with large scale IT implementations.”

He added that companies are increasing looking for ways to save money, such as IT outsourcing in London, with even greater choice and flexibility often available through use of cloud computing.

Mr Lovell went on to say that the cloud model had “made its mark” on the way firms run their technical departments, with modern infrastructure “fundamentally changing” the way businesses access and pay for IT.

A survey of chief information officers, published by Gartner last week, found that cloud computing was their number-one technology priority for the coming 12 months.ADNFCR-8000229-ID-800360376-ADNFCR

IT support in London: Soca agrees major outsourcing deal

January 13th, 2011

The Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) has become the latest organisation to agree a major IT outsourcing deal.

Soca has decided to delegate responsibility for its IT infrastructure to a third party in a £157 million, ten-year deal.

The move has been made in light of the government’s £81 billion public spending cuts, with many public-funded institutions turning to outsourcers to provide increased IT efficiencies.

Soca’s outsourcing plan was approved by the Home Office and Treasury following a full review conducted by the Cabinet Office’s Efficiency Reform Group.

Trevor Pearce, director general of SOCA, said: “This contract secures an efficient and sustainable IT platform which will enable us to modernise and enhance our technological capabilities in fighting crime.”

He added that the IT infrastructure “would improve the effectiveness of UK law enforcement in dislocating criminal markets”.

Last week, it was reported that NASA had signed a ten-year deal to outsource its IT operations to a third party support provider.ADNFCR-8000229-ID-800335043-ADNFCR

Breaking news from ihotdesk, the home of IT outsourcing in London

February 16th, 2010

A new government campaign will attempt to tackle cyber crime from fraudsters and rogue traders, IT outsourcing holders have been told.

Figures from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) reveal that 73 per cent of UK residents have received a scam email in the last year, with cyber fraud costs consumers around £3.5 billion each year.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills revealed a specialist cyber enforcement team will be formed to deal with crimes which use the internet to con businesses and consumers.

Consumer minister Kevin Brennan commented: “Our investment will help the OFT and Trading Standards to put in place the new specialist teams, training and technology required to take the fight to these criminals.”

A recent study from research consultancy IDC predicted that IT security industry will perform well during the coming 12 months, as firms are expected to increase their spending on protection by 19 per cent.

The British Philippine Outsourcing council to hold Networking event in London’s Mayfair

February 5th, 2010

The British Philippines Outsourcing Council (BPOC) will be holding an networking event on February 18th from 5:00pm at Hush in London’s Mayfair. Supported by The Philippines Embassy in London, BPOC (bpoc.uk.com) aims to promote The Philippines as an outsourcing destination for call centre, BPO and IT outsourcing to British businesses.

BPOC provides research, contacts and location specific information to allow British business to successfully benefit from the immense human capital available in the archipelago and to act as a networking tool to allow Philippines based vendors and British business to connect.

The outsourcing industry in The Philippines already employs over 200,000 people predominantly in the call centre industry but has also been successful in IT outsourcing and other back office functions. Manila now employs more people in the business processing outsourcing industry than any other city worldwide. The country has been especially popular in attracting voice call centre activity and whilst most activity is still for American based businesses, an increasing number of British businesses have moved activity there from other locations including India. This first event of 2010 will provide a casual forum for conversations and stories to be shared as The Philippines aims to replicate the success it has achieved in The American marketplace in The UK.

The founding members of The British Philippines Outsourcing Council include Cyber City Teleservices, Adec Solutions and Merlin Information Systems. Call centre outsourcing veteran and long-time advocate of The Philippines, Rob O’Malley has been appointed as The Chairman of BPOC to guide it through the initial phases and will be supported by fellow BPOC board members, Ian McGowan of Adec and Richard Patterson of Merlin.

Outsourcing firm readies to hire, expand

October 20th, 2009

A London-based company started by the former head of Arthur Andersen’s outsourcing business is setting up its U.S. headquarters at the O’Hara Plaza on Higgins Road in Chicago, and intends to hire and expand rapidly.

The outsourcing company, called Xchanging, is the largest processor of insurance claims in the U.K., and it sees an opportunity to get involved in this country’s health care reform, as well as in fields where it handles other companies’ back-office work, such as banking, procurement and human resources.

Xchanging consolidated several offices and moved 15 of its European managers here, bringing the Chicago office at 8755 W. Higgins Rd. to 150 employees.

“We’re looking to take it as high as possible as fast as possible,” with job growth in everything from clerical staff to experts in bank trades and insurance claims settlements, said founder and CEO David Andrews.

The company chose Chicago as its U.S. headquarters, where it has set up a teaching center and a “claims office of the future,” because of Chicago’s infrastructure, dedication to the arts, nightlife, and livability, Andrews said.

“I used to come to Chicago for training and lived there for a couple of months. I liked Andy’s Bar, the nightlife and the whole social scene and infrastructure, said Andrews, whose last position at Arthur Andersen was managing partner, West Europe. He left Andersen in 1999, three years before its collapse.

Xchanging, which sets up 50-50 partnerships with its clients, will also set up a processing center in the Midwest, but its location hasn’t been decided.
