IT Vendors Slow To Adopt Social Media

September 29th, 2010

Despite their technical acumen, only one-third of IT vendors are using social media as part of their marketing and partner communications strategies, according to a study by Amazon Consulting.
Technology vendors are beginning to increase their use of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube, with 45% now experimenting with social media in their partner communications, the study found. But 32% of those polled said they do not know how to effectively use these tools with their partners, Amazon Consulting said.

When it comes to solution providers, only 14% use social networks to find partners or foster partner-to-partner collaboration, the study found. However, 40% of solution providers use social media for customer acquisition and 28% use the technology to seek-out new employees, Amazon Consulting said. In total, 70% of solution providers use social media for some aspect of their business, the study determined.

Channel partners expect to expand or move into social media for marketing and partnership opportunities. In fact, 46% plan to market their solutions and services to customers; 27% plan to network with similar-minded people involved in the same markets, and 23% will look for complementary solution providers for potential partnerships, the survey found

Neither solution providers nor IT vendors have many systems in place to measure social media’s success or failure.

“More than half of solution providers (52%) don’t track the revenue impact of using social media vehicles. And although many vendors are wading into the waters of social media to support specific product launches or major events, a sizeable percentage (32%) indicated they have a lack of understanding of how to use social media effectively with their partners, or they are lacking demonstrable ROI in their activities here to date,” Amazon Consulting said.

Businesses across industries continue to grapple with the benefits and risks associated with social media. Regardless of vertical market or area of expertise, most small and midsize companies are using these technologies to promote their businesses, according to Daryl Willcox Publishing

Research and Markets: Top Chinese information technology outsourcing vendors, black book survey 2009 results

February 10th, 2010

Results from 2009 Black Book Survey. Trust, innovation, customization and reliability are the most important attributes influencing ITO client satisfaction with their outsourcing providers.

The 2009 Black Book of Outsourcing client experience survey investigated a subset of over 460 technology and application outsourcing (AO) contracts held by 58 of the top China-centric ITO suppliers. 18 key performance indicators (KPIs) or criteria are employed, specific to infrastructure and AO buyers within the Chinese managed IT services sector, scored on each respective vendor then ranked per KPI.

Key finding: Most important customer satisfaction KPIs for clients utilizing China-centric vendors

Trust, innovation, customization and reliability are the most important attributes influencing client satisfaction with their Chinese outsourcing providers.

Key finding: Vendor dissatisfaction is uncommon in the China-centric technology area, with the applications development and software testing sectors among top ranked suppliers

Strong dissatisfaction in this geographically-specific ITO sector occurred in 17.5% of first year clients, but only 5.1% of clients beyond their thirteenth month or more of contracted relations. UK clients are among the most satisfied with China-centric outsourcing services delivery, averaging 87.5% in 2009. European clients in countries other than the UK were the next most satisfied group (83.8%) of all geographic locations, matching clients experience with vendor delivery.

Stronger dissatisfaction was more commonly reported from engagements of US clients, at 12.4% from first year contracts. Satisfaction scores increased sharply in US clients beyond their first year of their contract arrangements.

Key finding: Comprehensive services vendor arrangements from applications development vendors produce the highest satisfaction rates

Vendors offering comprehensive application services (development, management and maintenance) ranked highest in the overall survey by global clients. ITO clients showed significant preference for vendors capable of offering more extensive applications service lines once satisfied with initial projects.

Times Still Tough for Software Vendors, Though Less so for SaaS

November 20th, 2009

The overall trends didn’t change much in 2009’s third quarter, based on Ray Wang’s observations on his A Software Insider’s Point of View blog. Now, as then when I spoke with McNee, maintenance revenues continue to help on-premise vendors deal with the loss of new-licenses revenues. While SaaS looks relatively strong as a category, some SaaS vendors saw declines in growth, with Wang offering Concur (12.94 percent), Ultimate Software (9.76 percent), Taleo (8.77 percent) and NetSuite (3.22 percent) as examples.

Despite this, the long-term economic outlook continues to favor SaaS, writes Wang. Gartner Research Director Sharon Mertz agrees with Wang, predicting that SaaS will enjoy consistent growth through 2013. In a recent report, Mertz writes that global SaaS revenue will reach $7.5 billion this year, up 17.7 percent from 2008.

The fourth quarter will be “a great buying season” for software customers, says Wang, with vendors discounting licenses and professional services. Like McNee (and lots of other market observers), Wang is also predicting “significant acquisitions” in the SaaS space next year, with hardware vendors, telecommunications providers and “other companies looking to gain software multiples” among the likely buyers.

Though it’s a bit tricky for on-premise software providers as they don’t want to cannibalize their existing solutions, many of them have the money and some of them may have the wherewithal to purchase SaaS vendors. I’ve also written before about the possibility of business process outsourcing providers purchasing SaaS companies, to help reduce their delivery costs and differentiate their service offerings.

Still, writes Wang, “hybrid deployment will continue to be the norm.” Indeed, vendors including IBM and Microsoft are pitching hybrid models for collaboration software, and 95 percent of executives recently surveyed by services provider Avanade said they expect most companies will adopt a hybrid model of enterprise computing rather than a cloud-only model.
