Computer, consumer, communications’ becomes ‘wireless, wellness, wearable’

March 24th, 2010

For the past two decades or so, a mantra in the IT industry has been the 3 C’s: computer, consumer, communications.
Let’s throw around a couple of new phrases today that could apply to healthcare. First, there are the 3 W’s (and no, we don’t mean World Wide Web. That’s so 1995): “wireless, wellness, wearable.”
Or, take it to another level and call it W3P3, for “wireless, wellness, wearable” and “preventive, predictive, personalized.”
As much as I’d like to claim these these phrases as my own, I can’t. I credit Mohan Kumar Rajagopal, a researcher at Imperial College London, for the 3 W’s, and Bhupinder Grewal, vice president of IT outsourcing firm Genpact, for W3P3. (Haven’t heard of Genpact? It’s an India-based former General Electric subsidiary that’s got a coveted single-letter ticker symbol, G, on the New York Stock Exchange.)
I picked up these phrases from the Wireless Health Group on LinkedIn, and at least one, the 3 W’s, has been tweeted this morning, so perhaps they’re gaining traction. Obviously, I’m publicizing them here, but I’d like to get your feedback. What do you think of these phrases? Any other suggestions? Does wireless health even need a catchy mantra?
This could be a big opportunity here to influence technology developers for years to come. – Neil

Wireless phone service to be restored soon

March 23rd, 2010

Amid mounting dissatisfaction among consumers of private PSTN and ISP about the BTRC’s recent steps of shutting down the companies, government yesterday announced to restore the activities in a day or two.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) led drive against illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) business from 14 March.

Earlier, BTRC suspended activities of four public switched telephone network (PSTN) service providers including Dhaka Phone, Worldtel, Ranks Telecommunication and People’s Tel and 19 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) on the allegation of illegal VoIP business.

Both home and commercial users faced huge trouble just after the sealing of the companies. People failed to make necessary communication.

Banks and call centres had faced countless problems. Outsourcing and other activities were also hampered.

In a government press note, it has been said that the revenue has escalated to Tk 3 crore due to shutting down of VoIP business.

Considering the problems of consumers the government decided to resume the activities of the organisations.

Wireless management saves money, IT outsourcing users told

February 25th, 2010

Closer management of wireless services can result in savings of between ten and 35 per cent for companies, IT outsourcing users have been told.

Industry analyst Gartner pointed out that businesses are expected to adopt increasingly sophisticated mobile devices in the coming year, although many could neglect to draft adequate policies to deal with this.

Phil Redman, research vice president at Gartner, explained that problems can occur when wireless telephony services are introduced on an ad-hoc basis, leading to more expense than is necessary.

“A good method to ensure a strong policy is to incorporate a centralised team across IT that will be impacted by mobile and wireless decisions. This team can strategise for the strongest and widest policy,” he commented.

Mr Redman also pointed out that costs can be reduced if mobile devices, operating system platforms and form factors are standardised.

Last week, Mobile Choice magazine editor Natasha Stokes claimed that there will be a rapid expansion in the smartphone security market, as uptake of the devices increases in the coming years.

Prestige Telecom provides update on MSA negotiations with new wireless entrants

December 4th, 2009

Prestige Telecom Inc. announces that it is currently in the final stages of negotiating a number of major Master Services Agreements (MSAs) with new wireless entrants that will include Engineering, Aerial Construction and associated Installation and Technical Services.

These MSA agreements are a direct result of the Advanced Wireless Services (”AWS”) spectrum auction and the subsequent announcements by the wireless telecommunications companies to build advanced wireless networks across Canada.

Pierre Yves Méthot, Chairman and CEO of Prestige commented, “We have already begun to provide services associated with these agreements on a purchase order basis and look forward to expanding our activities with our customers as the details regarding the full scope of services and timing for these services are finalized”. Mr. Méthot added, “We expect to conclude these negotiations by the end of 2009 and once we complete these agreements we will provide updates on the scope of work included and the timing for these activities”.

The rapid demand for wireless Internet access and other data services is being driven by new applications including music, broadcast, text messaging, video games, mobile healthcare, mobile TV, GPS, digital wallet and social networking. Network upgrades to advanced generation-3G and 4G-technology, and the deployment of this new technology and equipment are expected to drive double digit growth in wireless infrastructure spending across Canada. Increasingly, wireless carriers are outsourcing their communications site infrastructure needs in order to accelerate their network deployments and focus on their core competencies of driving customer growth through a combination of innovative service offerings and network capacity and performance.
